The U.S., a wretched hive of scum and villainy.
I'm rather skeptical of the claims these people are making regarding their machine. Does anyone have more information on it regarding whether it works and if there are any side effects? If it's true, it would be great for lazy fat sonsobiches like me.

Turbosonic Only 10 Minutes To Burn Fat

DENVER -- Sweating off the pounds might be a thing of the past with a new machine that promises to shed pounds simply by standing on it.

"You can stand on this machine for 10 minutes and it's equal to 45 minutes to 60 minutes of typical exercise," said DeepTone instructor Jennifer Ament.

Ament said TurboSonic uses sound waves that produce frequencies to stimulate your cells. She said a person can burn up to 300 calories in 10 minutes, and that's why people shouldn't be on it for more than that.

From the article:

However, Wolkodoff said, for people trying to lose weight, they should combine other cardio exercises with TurboSonic.

If it really worked, why would you have to do cardio as well?

I've seen numerous machines that enable one to lose pounds without excercising- the slot machines in London casinos.

Call me naive, but I think eating less is a more reliable way to loose some pounds. Additional exercise might be a good thing to do, but working on eating habits is much more important.

To me, this wonder machine and the way it is described sounds like one of those "commercial presentations" aired around 4 a.m.

Crapola. The only way to lose weight is to eat less calories than you expend, end of story. Standing on some giant vibrator isn't going to make one iota of difference.

Stimulate your cells to do what, precisely? Radiate heat? Where does this energy go?

"I lost 9 pounds, a pants size, which is very exciting and I noticed my face tightening," said Kelly Walton.Walton has been using the TurboSonic for seven weeks, usually once a week. It's already made a difference for her.
If this is an example of the best recommendation they can provide then that's pretty sad. An average loss of little more than 1lb per week? That's not even suggestive of success. When someone starts a new exercise regime (and I use the term loosely) they will invariably improve their chances of weight loss by making improvements in other ways, e.g. eating healthier or walking more. The loss of 1lb per week could easily be explained by the person walking round the corner to the gym.

Of course, the person will expend calories simply by standing there and tensing their muscles. Nothing amazing there. But nothing that will produce noticable weight loss, either.

No doubt this will catch on, though. Some people are happy to waste months or years of their lives following one fad after another rather than eating healthily and taking a bit of exercise.

Not to say anything about this machine, but thre is a difference between eating less calories and eating the same, but using up more: The body in case of just eating less becomes weak and soft, the skin hanging around like a sack, eating the same amount, but doing exercises makes you:
Feel better and
getting a tight, attracting body.

It is your choice :)

What did Jane Fonda say (in her aerobic videos):
"if you want to have an attractive **s, move it :)

It's the same as this. It's called "vibration training" and it's mostly useless.

If it worked as advertized, it would kill you. Imagine all the cells of your body "turning on" at one time. Can anyone tell me why the endocrine and nervous systems wouldn't also energize?

Let's also not mention the fact that humans are exposed to a great array of audible and inaudible sound waves daily with no ill effect.

Do you suppose that Ms. Walton was doing the cardio exercising, as recommended? I know I've lost about 10lbs in the last couple of months with my cardio exercising. Or maybe I would have lost more if I had been properly vibrated?

Sure it works. You spend all your money on TurboSonic treatments, so you have nothing left to spend on food.

But seriously, I wonder how many of these scams get away by saying that their product works when used in conjunction with conventional exercise and diet programs? I wonder too if there's any effect where the woo-woo thing correlates with an improvement in compliance with the conventional parts of the plan?

Years ago I witnessed a machine that never made it to market, but seemed like it would actually work. You stand on it and it vibrates hard enough to cause you to fight to maintain your balance. The vibration was variable.

Losing weight by eating less and doing more exercise? Pah, if it were that easy, anyone could do it :D

I lost 24 pounds in about 5 months, without doing any cardio workout (I only do 2-3 minutes of pullup/pushups daily).

I just diversified my eating habits and stopped drinking everything except cold water. People don't understand how many calories they drink...

A 330cc can of cola has about 140 calories, you drink 2-3 of these a day and we're talking about 400 calories a day (and some people drink 5-6 a day or more). Just by switching to water, you would drop about a pound a week (depending on how overweight you are) without working out.

And I heard it from several places that cold water burns calories. Why you may ask? Well, water have zero calories. Cold water reduces your body's temp and forces it to burn calories in order to warm itself. Probably not a lot of calories, but still, negative calories means you can eat a little bit more without gaining weight.

Oh, and if you want a decent body without working out too hard (2-3 minutes a day really), install a pull-up bar and do about 10 pullups a day and do several types of push-ups a day (about 40-60 daily) and within a month or two you'll see very nice results without any serious workout (genetics may take a role here). At least that worked for me.

Your solution involves effort and minor inconvenience. What you must underestand is that the people who would pay to use the Giant Vibrator wish to experience neither of these.

Wouldn't it follow from this that you'd do better if you drank only diet colas? You'd have the cold temp and the zero calories, PLUS a bit of caffeine to get your metabolism going.

What about turning the thermostat in your house down a bit in the winter time?

This is probably a scam based on Ultrasonic Liposuction, which is an actual developing technology that uses sound waves to break up fat cells. Fat cells are easily broken with ultrasound and the fat is taken up by the lymph system and other pathways.

I don't know if this has ever been established or if it is just idle speculation, but I remember reading once that drinking diet drinks can be counterproductive. The theory was that when you taste something sweet, your blood sugar dips in expectancy of an increase in sugar levels. When the increase doesn't arrive because it was a diet drink, you are left with slightly depressed blood sugar levels which the body tries to correct by making you feel peckish. So you are more likely to snack, and undo the good you have done by choosing diet drinks.

Is this sound, or a load of bull?
