I saw some idiot astrologer (Plainer?) waffling on about a lunar standstill so thought I would have a google for the real astronomy info.

I'm particularly stupid at the moment and I'm having trouble sorting the astrology from the astronomy. I get to a page that seems OK and then find it's linked to astrology. Coupled to this there is little agreement on how long and how often this phenomena happens. Surprising, considering astrology is a 'sience'...Ha!

The site I looked at that seemed to be good astronomy was so overloaded with interesting data that is incomprehensible to a non-astronomer like me that it didn't help much.

So what is it?
When does it happen?
How long for?
How often?

All explained in simple terms for a maroon like myself.

Probably what the astrologer in his seemingly poor understanding of the cosmos (which isn't itself a bad thing, but making their own assumptions just because it feels OK such as in astrology IS), is to the fact that the moon has a Rotation in its axis and a translation movement that have the same period and thus we see the same face of the moon always, maybe that's what he refers as standing still :D
