L’Oreal has sacked its first transgender model after a Facebook rant in which she claimed “ALL white people” are racist.

Munroe Bergdorf, 29, from London was billed as ‘the face of modern diversity’ when she was brought on board the brand’s #allworthit campaign just days ago.

This was a case of someone posting to Facebook, not Twitter, and it's pretty clear from what is quoted in the article she meant what she said, though she did modify it later to claim that she was complaining that ""When I stated that 'all white people are racist', I was addressing that fact that western society as a whole, is a SYSTEM rooted in white supremacy..."

Some of the remarks quoted come perilously close to claiming that racism is a genetically inherited condition.

Statements like this do not help resolve racial issues, reconciliation does not mean that one side dictates and the other obeys and this basically is another case of someone who believes themselves progressive upholding notions of worth based on skin color that are wrong no matter what skin color/sexual orientation your are.

I hate that we live in a political climate where I, in an esoteric way I hate consider this evidence of fair play.

I think she displayed some bigoted views, but I dont think she should lose her job over it. But then again, it's happening to people all over the spectrum, so at least it's fair play.

**** me, I can't wait till we go back to people being allowed to have opinions without it destroying their lives. I don't mind if it's one I don't like, I can voice mine if I feel that strongly.

Her opinions are vile, but in my perfect world she wouldn't have to fear for her job if she wanted to express them. It doesn't make her less of a model.

In my perfect world, models don't get fired over expressing their opinions because nobody even pays attention to the opinions of models.

Let me guess: In your perfect world, there'd be a jackboot in your face, ready to stomp you the moment you tried to dissociate yourself from anyone you disagreed with, or anyone who harmed your business.

This signature is intended to irradiate people.

She really shot herself in the foot with this one. With all the fanfare about her hiring, she wasn't just getting the job to be a model - she was also being hired to be a role model and seemed to be embracing that part of the job. Looking at her comments, she clearly knew full well what she was saying. Probably wishing that she'd waited a while and cashed a few fat L’Oreal paychecks before doing something like this.

That's beautiful.

I wonder if it's possible to repair that kind of genetic flaw or we just have to find a way to live with bigots among us? I hope the National Science Foundation is getting right on this.

Exactly, whatever else you may think about Benetton and their campaign, that person was chosen to provide a role model for people, I know enough about Gay/Lesbian couples to know that their relationship dynamics are in the end no different from heterosexual couples.

But I cannot stand people who argue that "Diversity applies to everyone except 'those people'." and that is exactly what she did.

I'm doing my share voluntarily. I have sex with all the dark skinned, dark eyed beauties I can. :D

Contributions to help cover the dinner and wine costs would be welcomed. Al in the name of anti-racism of course.

If you're white, isn't focusing in on "the dark skinned, dark eyed beauties" because of their perceived traits (good or bad) the definition of racism? :eye-poppi

I see this a lot. It's fairly standard to hear the word "white" used to refer to undesirable behaviors in my social circles.

Not only is white automatically racist, I've seen it asserted that racism is when whites oppress non-whites. Not just meaning that is an example, but that no other kind exists except that one.

You see, the colonialist European lexicographers wrote the dictionaries and deviously made the definition of racism more broad to hide the immorality of it or some such nonsense.

Ouch. Well, yeah, you can't really say that kind of stuff (which is, itself, a racist statement) and be a public representative in many places.

Exactly, I've been trying to run down a similar case involving a university, in which they picked a Black Gay individual as their Diversity Officer and they went online and made statements to the effect that White Gay's were all racist and got fired. As I have said earlier in this thread, anyone who claims that diversity/free speech, whatever, applies to everyone except 'those people' (However you define 'those people'.), is wrong there should be consequences.

I've seen some defense of her, from her, saying 'All white people are racist' really means that power structures are built on white supremacy and the like.

That's of course, abject ********. It's an even greater distortion than the 'power plus' redefinition of racism and sexism. Words have understood meanings, and 'All white people' means 'all white people'. If she did not mean what she plainly said, it isn't the fault of the fault of the listener/reader. Progressives, even black transwomen, need to be held to a basic standard in order to be effective advocates for our causes, and defending those who so utterly fail at a basic standard like she did hurts us all. This kind of tribal apologetic narrative smoothing is exactly what Trump allies do, and I won't give it a pass even from my 'tribe'.

The arrow of oppressor->oppressed only goes one way to these folk, so she literally believes what she says, I'm sure. It's written in black and white all over the place... just yesterday I went to my uni's orientation week to see what they were handing out at the "pronoun button" booth and wasn't surprised to see they had little pieces of cardboard saying racism is the structure of oppression against non-whites, among other things.

I can dig out the exact language if anyone cares

This transgender bod sacked by L'Oreal. I cannot see why there is such a big scandal. He/she was simply expressing an opinion on FB.

It was a sweeping generalisation, in the same way one might refer to 'the North Koreans' or the 'EU'. It's a given he/she was not talking about any one individual. What was he/she supposed to do? Give us never-ending lists of who's exempt?

Broadly speaking, towns such as Liverpool, Bristol and London DID get rich of the backs of human trafficking and slavery. The complete removal of personal identity and family ties for FOUR HUNDRED YEARS is certainly correctly identified as the oppression of one group of humans by another.

Racism is almost entirely predicated on the old slave class distinction. For example, where you were allowed to sit on a bus, or get a drink of water.

King George III one day was trundling along in his fine carriage when he passed an ornate carriage even more ostentatious and showy than his.

On asking who was the fellow gallivanting about in it, was told, 'That's a West Indian planter, Your Majesty.'

Sacking this model for stating a trite truth, shows how unbearably tokenist L'Oreal was in giving her/him a model contract at all. It was never sincere. It was always just a gesture.

If you can't see where she was wrong, and you cant see why the company would not want to retain someone who just spouted generalised racist ideaology and insulted a large portion of their target market, you probably need glasses.
Humans are accountable for their rubbish no matter their skin colour.

L'Oreal 'don't want to upset their target market'?

Phew! Well at least they won't have to bother hiring a transgender again.
