This totally doesn't answer your question, because I have no idea whereabouts it is but I just got reccomended The Little Mermaid Restaurant. (at least, I think this is the place).

The hotel is supposed to be next to a mall, which means there's probably tons of eateries there. And, for sure, you can always suck up with someone with a car. Like us, for example :)
 
I've been told that there are two really good seafood restaurants (when in Rome...) in the Ft. Lauderdale area:

Martha's on the Intracoastal

Of course, I'm going also to ask the locals when I get there where to go for good seafood. Since I'll be taking a break from my diet (c'mon, I haven't cheated in a month!), mall café courts don't sound all too appealing to me.

Well I have one recommendation for anyone wanting a "Holy crap I'm in Florida!" moment. Great food, too.

Bimini Boatyard

But be warned, it gets mighty crowded on weekends.
 
Unfortunately, the hotel is at about a mile from any freestanding restaurant or mall, so the food choices are limited if you don't have a car. The Islamorada Fish Company is a good seafood restaurant and it's part of the Bass Outdoor World/International Game Fishing Hall of Fame complex just west of the airport about 10 minutes from the hotel. It's also quite crowded on weekends and they don't take reservations.
If The Little Mermaid is the one I know of, it's pretty good, but caters to an older crowd (think retirement community/retired snowbirds). It's an older place, and is showing its age, but they have a well priced menu. Unfortunately it's in Pompano and I don't think is worth the drive.
Bimini Boatyard is a good suggestion for a real Florida place. They have great salads too.

I don't know about everyone else, but walking a mile in Florida in 75º weather sounds pretty good to me, considering it's about 11º here right now.

Spoken like a true non-Floridian (no offense intended). Remember that, even though this is still winter, the humidity in S. Florida is probably much more than you're used to. Walking any significant distance wearing more than shorts and a t-shirt is a great way to wind up covered in sweat. :)

Unfortunately, I will not be attending this weekend's festivities, though I will be wistfully thinking of all of you. In any event, I couldn't let this pass, you got to love any meeting/convention where one of the dining possibilities includes a resturaunt associated witht eh Bass Outdoor/International Game Fishing Hall of Fame. Not a dig about fishing or even Bass, but I love the idea of the "complex"...Indeed, how "complex" (as it were) could the BOIGFHoF be? :)

Very!

Bass fishin' is BIG in the south. I assure you, you are not prepared for how overwhelming a 'Bass Outdoor' complex can be.

Does a Bass fishing restaurant have a Sushi/bait bar?
 
As a matter of fact, they do have an excellent sushi bar. And they have an incredible round aquarium floor to ceiling in the middle of the restaurant as a focal point. The lobster tank is the first thing you see as you enter the restaurant. They also have a nice bar area to the right as you enter. The restaurant's to the left and the store is straight ahead. Even if you're not a fishing fan, it's worth a walk through the store. The restaurant seats several hundred people and they have a nice outdoor dining area on a man-made lagoon. And they make a terrific sour apple martini.

Geez, can we do sushi one night and something wickedly Floridian Saturday? I mean, I have a car, and I'm willing to share. Again, especially with cute female types....
