Anti-Kerry film to air in prime-time
Nation's largest TV chain orders all 62 stations to show movie without commercials next week.
October 11, 2004: 1:24 PM EDT

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Sinclair Broadcast Group, owner of the largest chain of television stations in the nation, plans to air a documentary that accuses Sen. John Kerry of betraying American prisoners during the Vietnam War, a newspaper reported Monday.

The network has ordered all 62 of its stations to air "Stolen Honor: Wounds That Never Heal" without commercials in prime-time next week, the Washington Post said, just two weeks before the Nov. 2 election.

Between Sinclair, Clear Channel, Fox News, Limbaugh, Hannity, Boortz, and the rest of the "talk radio" types, it amazes me that people still go on about a "liberal media" with a straight face.

When Sinclair refused to air the nightline episode where they recited all the names of US servicemnet killed in Iraq, the story was that Sinclair was small potatoes and inconsequential.

After we have had The Corporation, The Hunting of the President, F911, The Manchurian Candidate, Going Upriver, Day After Tomorrow, Silver City, Outfoxed, Bush's Brain, and other movies with subtle or not to subtle political messages I don't think an anti-kerry film showed on a chain of local tv stations isn't going to amount to much.

I can't turn on my AM radio during the day and evening without being bombarded by left-wing pinko liberal media .....

Thing is, most of the other things were movies.

There is a law about equal coverage on "our television screens". So Sinclair would have to show a pro-Kerry movie of equal length BY LAW. Their only other choice would be to show their little deal in the movie theaters.

Surely you wouldn't want any lawbreaking surrounding the elections, would you Corplinx?

Distortion. Sinclair decided to do this after Michael Moron arranged to show his idiot propaganda movie on election eve.

Then you're ok with situational ethics?

Imagine that. Wonder where that leads?

Patricia, currently it is legal to show a movie of the most biased piece of crap a person can put together without balance, as long as it's in a theater.

However, currently there is an equal air time law for major candidates on the broadcast media. So legally, if Sinclair shows their movie on one or more broadcast stations, they must show the opposite viewpoint for an equal amount of time.

You might not like the law, but it's there. Sinclair only has two legal choices: Show it on TV and also show a pro-Kerry film of equal length on the same stations, OR show their anti-Kerry film in as many movie theaters as they desire.

If this is the "fairness doctrine", I thought it had expired. If it hasn't, it ought to - this is another example of how the government constrains free speech. Such rules are a laugh - the Liberal Media acts as the propaganda arm of the Lurch campaign, and just because they call their biased product "news", they get away with it.

They do a piss-poor job of it, if that's the case.

The fairness doctrine remains just beneath the surface of concerns over broadcasting and cablecasting, and some members of congress continue to threaten to pass it into legislation. Currently, however, there is no required balance of controversial issues as mandated by the fairness doctrine.

Okay, then. Bring on the televised biased documentaries. If it's not illegal, then screw it.
