Let them eat cake

I found this a tad bit ironic:

It's Good Enough for the Poor (Reuters)

On the heels of the president's "What, me worry?" response to the death, destruction and dislocation that followed upon Hurricane Katrina comes the news of his mother's Labor Day visit with hurricane evacuees at the Astrodome in Houston.

Commenting on the facilities that have been set up for the evacuees -- cots crammed side-by-side in a huge stadium where the lights never go out and the sound of sobbing children never completely ceases -- former First Lady Barbara Bush concluded that the poor people of New Orleans had lucked out.

"Everyone is so overwhelmed by the hospitality. And so many of the people in the arena here, you know, were underprivileged anyway, so this, this is working very well for them," Mrs. Bush told American Public Media's "Marketplace" program, before returning to her multi-million dollar Houston home.

On the tape of the interview, Mrs. Bush chuckles audibly as she observes just how great things are going for families that are separated from loved ones, people who have been forced to abandon their homes and the only community where they have ever lived, and parents who are explaining to children that their pets, their toys and in some cases their friends may be lost forever. Perhaps the former first lady was amusing herself with the notion that evacuees without bread could eat cake.

Considering the "Let them eat cake" myth....

Let Them Eat Cake

But Marie Antoinette was not quite as foolish and spoiled as the public believed. It certainly is not true that she said "Let them eat cake" when told that people were starving. As a woman and a foreigner she made a convenient scapegoat for the nation's problems, and it seemed that no slander against her was too wild to be widely believed.

and history continues to repeat itself.

I'm not sure I understand. Are you saying that Mrs. Bush never made that statement? Or that she's being made a scapegoat somehow?

I know that her "beautiful mind" remark was taken somewhat out of context, but I don't see how this one could be.

I'm sure nobody's planning to decapitate Babs Bush.

Although if they tried, that triple row of pearls would probably blunt the guillotine blade pretty well.

It's funny about the "let them eat cake" remark. It was attributed to Marie Antoinette's mother-in-law before her, and also to another previous queen of France. It seems to be the sort of remark the French felt an uppity queen would make...although oddly enough, they only accused foreign-born queens of making it.

I'm surprised that Barbara Bush didn't immediately apologize for her inappropriate remarks and indicate that she was just "misunderstood" and the press took her remarks out of context. But then again the Bushies never seem to apologize to peons - plus maybe she really meant what she said is just a mean spirited bitch.

Bonus Bush flops!!!

Mrs. GW Bush was recently giving a speech and she kept calling the storm "Hurricane Karina". Normally not a big deal except with the Bushs looking out of touch lately, youd think theyd be more on top of these kinda mistakes.

I highly suspect that this whole article has a heavy spin. I'd like to see a full video clip of the incident. I'm willing to bet that Bab's isn't the cold-hearted monster that Reuters keeps insisting she is.

I heard the clip. It wasnt taken out of context.

What's worse - Barbara Bush's remarks or 60 years of Democrat rule in NO that has kept its black residents poor, uneducated and dependent on welfare? And, of course, voting Democrat. It's almost as if the Dem politicians planned it that way... but that's silly, because hardly any Democrat-run big cities have large <strike>voting blocs</strike> numbers of poor, uneducated blacks. Right?

I've seen that clip. As much as I would think it was spun had I not seen it, It really wasn't. That's a ratehr accurate description of her statement.
