korean hostage beheaded

GOOD! Hes an enemy to our state. The world is that much safer and.............ummm wait a sec, was he North or South Korean?

I think they should ignore these beheadings. That way theyll blend in with the bombings and shootings we ignore on a daily basis.

How heartless and utterly barbaric; to cut a human being's head off.

goddamn. if the press is accurate, he was some poor evangelist kid who wanted to help people...and this is what he gets.

He was South Korean, so that would make him an Allie I believe. And I don't think they should ignore anything about the war. People should face up to the reality of war, whether the cause is just or not. And more importantly, these are not soldiers who are being executed as such (that would be bad enough), but they have thus far been civilians, and that's even more vile.

True, we run the risk of disensitization (I think this is what you meant, so I'm sorry if I misinterpreted you), but at least having the information assessible is better than an "out of sight, out of mind" approach. Having access to knowledge about everything that's going on in a certain situation is part of what having a free press is about. The more information you have, the better able you are to access the situation.

How long till conspiracy theories that it was Americans who beheaded him in an effort to besmirch Iraqi resistance, ala Nicholas Berg? Or perhaps that it was a simply a protest for Aby Ghraib?

I do think the more common it becomes, the less shock value for the hostage takers, and more revulsion.

They'll just have to find more and more gruesome, heartless, barbaric, etc. ways to kill people.

As an example, they could burn them to death. Slow roast them to death. Torture them to death. Maybe hook their intestine and march them around a pole. All methods with historic precedents.

If it makes you feel any safer, the U.S. has been confining, torturing and killing people, too. But the U.S. are the 'Good Guys', so none of that counts.

Actually, I thought the South Korean government would not comply with the demands.

I'm not seeing much outrage yet, so I hope it ramps up to the same level of anger we saw in the media when that girl pointed at a prisoners' genitals.

I'm sick of the atrocities perpetrated on non-combatants by these power-mad bullies. All I can think of to describe them is primitive. They act bi-cameral.

Let's start cleaning up this mess by going after the Saudis who supported and funded this group and work our way down to the cell members, follow the money in reverse.

I couldn't agree more.

Actually, I thought the South Korean government didn't comply with the demands.

I think the only demand was for SK troops to withdraw. I doubt anyone really expected that to happen.

Well, it is a very barbaric thing to do. These people are fanatics, plain and simple. And we should all be clear here- these things would be happening whether the horrors of abu gharib had occured or not. This is al qaeda we're talking about here. abu gharib was just a convenient excuse. I also doubt that even these people really believe that by butchering people they will prevail. I think it provides them with some form of bloodthirsty satisfaction.

Yup...we're just as bad as them!! And their media has denounced them, and their congress has investigated them,...and their government is trying them.... er...umm... no, they're not quite the same as us after all....are they?

Apologist.

How astonishingly barbaric.

At the point in history when they could have assumed the moral high-ground, they prove to the world that they are actually capable of being more despicable then ever before.

But in that region, beheading and cutting off hands is normal. For them, they did take the moral high ground. To them, America was out of line by humiliating a prisoner.

Of course, on this side of the looking glass......

Werent the guys who killed that American in Saudi Arabia killed a few days ago?

I'm cynical enough to call it a token act of appeasement to the US, because Bush would feel pressured to do something if they did not. They got killed pretty quick after the beheading. The Saudis had to kill the guys they had probably always let operate in freedom while they looked the other way.

It will take decades to repair the damage that has been done to American prestige that has been wilfully done in these past couple of years. If it's ever reparied at all.

It's one of those little things. Once you tell a fib about a blow job, you're forever linked to blow jobs.

Once you round up, torture and kill people, you will always be linked to behavior like that. Just ask the Germans about getting over image problems.

Pretending bad things have not been done, and that 'adequate measures' are being taken will not make the problems go away. Quite the reverse, actually.

When the so-called "investigations" fizzle out in the middle-management, the utter bastards at the higher levels who encouraged the behavior will get off scott free, and a new round of the same kinds of abuses will continue.

Well, at least when Bill lied people didn't die....

It took the Marines a little while to get past trading sex for allowing spies into secret areas of the embassy in Russia. I would like to believe 'adequate measures' are being taken. It is enough for us to courts-martial a soldier, but not enough for the Iraqis, who would probably bury him in the sand and stone him.

And I agree (and have experience with) your comment about about higher-ups getting off. I used to work on the most amazing reports while I was in the service. I would often question why Col. So-and-so walked while this PFC went to jail, etc.

It doen't matter what the higher-ups wanted or ordred, because there is a little thing called the 'Lawful Order'. At every stage and every step of accountability from the top down there was a failure in leadership. The US service members should not have done something they or any reasonable person would know is unethical, illegal or immoral.

True about lawful orders.

Unfortunately, some of these people must have been well convinced that what they were asked to do was 'lawful'. Changing guidelines, etc.

A long time. You see, the south Korean man wasn't a jew. When jews are beheaded, it's a matter of seconds until somebody claims they were really "zionist agents" or that the whole thing is staged.

Eventually the conspiracy theory will arrive, but it will be slower this time.
