Kiling "nonwhite" people motive in shooting spree

I think the OP is criticizing the claim that Obama's election represents the end of racism and the fulfillment of Dr. King's dream.

Unless I'm mistaken it wasn't meant to suggest that Obama should have ushered in an era beyond racism, but to show the ridiculous nature of that expectation.

fair enough, I have just been reading so much stupid on other threads, I may have gotten stuck in sarcasm mode.

It's still an extreme bit of silly rhetoric.

Yes, Obama is a symbol. He's a symbol that a black man can make it as President of the United States. Something that no atheist can hope to achieve while remaining honest about his beliefs.

Does this mean that there is no racism at all tiers of society? Of course not! Anyone that states otherwise would be an idiot. Unfortunately, you'll be hard pressed to find anyone that states that.

The symbol is powerful, and if people can't see that, then well, too bad for them.

Lonewulf, I think that may be a typo or do you really think it is unfortunate that one would be hard pressed to find an idiot?

I wish this were true, and maybe such people are rare nationwide, but I've heard the sentiment expressed by more than a few people, online, and out in the world. It's an idiotic view, but one that does exist.

It's unfortunate for the OP, since it abolishes his point.

But I often, unfortunately, add "unfortunately" and "fortunately" in a sentence much like someone might add "y'know" or "like", much to my shame. :(

I highly doubt they mean that they really think that there is no racism at all. Even if they state something that looks like it, I'd just think of it as more of a euphemism first, and actual real thought second.

And even then, would these people really deserve a thread devoted just to them? C'mon now. (Though, to be fair, threads have been started for much sillier things...)

King's dream was about preventing racisim at the government level. Obama gettting elected is a fulfilment of that aspect of King's dream.

You will never defeat racisim at the individual level...unless you let the government run everything and even then it would take a long time.

Usually, aren't Jews white? I don't care to argue if a Jew is about religion or race. I am going to lean towards this guy being mentally unstable.

Furthermore, the article says this guy has already been in court about this incident. I would understand a follow-up news report about the fate of such a person, but to completly repeat the event seems unnecessary.

So, not all racist bigots in the US dropped dead on seeing Obama inaugurated.

Fine. Obama failed. Let´s remove him and install McCain in his place.

Or did you actually have some *sane* point?

That is nothing like OP's point. Look at his recent posts and it will be clear to you that the OP is a strong and vocal supporter of Obama. Look at context before you go on the attack.

If somebody wants to be understood correctly, he should make sure that their OP speaks for itself, without the aid of their posting record.

My point would be understood if you listened to a lot of right-wing commentators recently.

A lot of them claim that because the USA can elect Obama, racism has vanished, and so we should ignore issues of race.

It was crystal clear to me, and also made a valid point. Of course it's an obvious "duh!" point, but so are the clear rebuttals to 911 conspiracy nuts, wacko anti-atheist Christians, and bigfooters.

This is typical claim of White Supremicists. Since the movement strongly identifies with the Nazi Party (often they are called neo-nazis) They most emphatically claim that Jews are not white and are thus part of the 'mud-people'

IMHO this claim shows the complete lack of connection to the real world that such ideologies have.

One reason why I didn't care to dicuss this detail. Do you agree that the majority of people who identify themselves as Jews are white, not black?

Yes, but completely irrelevant. The subject of the story is a white supremecist, so in trying to understand his actions, one must look at his defenition of what is white.

I was merely pointing out that his targeting of synagogue due to antipathy towards non-whites is completely consistent from a white-supremecist point of view. My opintion regarding the overall validity of that white-supremecist point of view was not at issue nor was relevant to trying to understand the actions of this man.
