Virginia grade schoolers accidentally served alcohol at lunch
SEPTEMBER 29--Earlier this month, the staff, faculty, and Board of Trustees at Virginia's private Alexandria Country Day School had a Mexican-themed dinner complete with some tasty margaritas. For some reason, the leftover hooch was placed in a school refrigerator. You can probably guess what's coming next. On September 10, the booze was mistaken for "limeade" by school workers and actually served at lunch to students in the third, fourth, and fifth grades.
D'oh!

The curruption of innocents is always awesome.

Children should be exposed to alchohol at an early age in order to aviod the mystique. The kids hated the magaritias. "Yuck, booze tastes like crap". What a great lesson to learn.

Ya know the yearly stories of the college freshman who dies of alchy poison cause he drank too much. That happens to the dorks who've never been expsoed to booze, and then drink themslves into a coma cause of their inexperience.

I noticed that phenomenon as well. It mostly happened to a kid who came from a private christian school. Usually the kid would either turn into a raging whore or an out of control addict.

- I got one. When I was in the army, we had a really really sheltered guy in our barracks. No social skill to speak of, really dorky, pretty young - right out of high school. Took up smoking because the rest of us were doing it, and nobody ever showed him how to inhale... he just puffed it into his mouth and blew it right back out.

- He got a lot of static, but my roomie kind of took him under his wing. One night it was this kid's birthday, and he shows up at the club where we hung out with a WHOLE bottle of cheap Ronrico rum. My roomie says something like, whoa man, you're not going to drink all that are you? The kid tips up the bottle and drinks a fourth of it in one draught. He ended up drinking 3/4 of the bottle in about an hour!! This kid didn't even drink beer. Needless to say, my roomie and a couple of others physically carried him back to the barracks and plopped him in bed, then left again back out to the clubs.

- Turns out, the kid was so drunk that he crapped himself severely while in bed and dressed. Then he woke up in a daze, tried to clean himself up, but only succeeded in getting kaka all over the bathroom and his barracks room. It wasn't pretty.

- But it was funny!

It's not just "college freshmen" either. I have seen it with 1st year grad students who come out of the private christian college. They get to grad school and let loose (and end up washing out as a result).

My interpretation is that they never had a chance to go through that college transition before, and are doing it now.

It's too bad, because they generally are nice people and generally have a good background (it helps that they are rich enough to attend the private school). But the social aspect makes them a risk.

I would like to see evidence, aside from anecdotes, to support this theory. Perhaps we should hand out crack in the first grade?

Mark Twain's short story, The Man That Corrupted Hadleyburg exposes this phenomenon.

Seems the stranger had been offended by a citizen of Hadleyburg, a town renowned for its honesty. Town motto was "Lead Us Not Into Temptation". People didn't lie, cheat, or steal, nobody had locks on their doors, etc.

Of course, the stranger, seeking revenge, not just against the person who had offended him, but against the whole town, attacked it at its weakest point - its untested ability to resist temptation. He succeeded in corrupting every single prominent citizen, and exposing them to public ridicule and humiliation, while himself remaining anonymous - a sting that would have left Redford and Newman applauding with admiration.

The tale ends with the observation that the town has changed its name (not revealed), and its motto is now "Lead Us Into Temptation".

In Europe many countries are ok with kids drinking wine and such. Do they have as much of a binge drinking issue as in the states?

The other part of the story is the pregnancies (and abortions) that follow the drinking. It was infamous at University of Virginia when I went there. I am not sure if it was true but it was infamous.

I went to school in the days when 18 year olds could drink. For freshman (or at least this freshman), it was easy to get beer, not too difficult to get pot but much more difficult to get hard liquor.

Does anyone know if it is easier to get pot than beer these days?

Pot, beer, cigs, hard liquor, oxy, speed, LSD. The high school kids around here can easily get any of this stuff. Why do you think they call it 'high school'. Condoms seem to be a little more difficult to obtain.
