WASHINGTON, Feb 12 (Reuters) - President Donald Trump proceeded with an overhaul of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts on Wednesday, becoming chairman of the organization and firing its president, Deborah Rutter.
The Kennedy Center said in a statement that its board of trustees, newly filled with appointees by Trump, had elected him chair and named Richard Grennell as interim president.
Trump replaces billionaire philanthropist David Rubenstein as chair of the Kennedy Center, one of the leading arts organizations in the country that has enjoyed bipartisan support for years.

Place your bets here that Larry the Cable Guy will be the next Mark Twain prize winner and Village People for music.

"In a social media post he [Trump] lambasted it for for having held "Drag Shows.""

I wish Shakespeare were still alive to comment.

Conan O'Brien is scheduled to receive the next Mark Twain Prize Award for 2025. There's been some iffy choices over the last decade or so, but he absolutely deserves it. He is in the top 5 of my favorite comedians ever.

Kind of scared that it will be taken away from him (The Tonight Show, anyone?). Even if it does, will probably make him more famous.

I wish I had a military dog named after me.

Conan (born 2013 or 2014 - died November 2023)[1] was a special operations military working dog in the United States 1st SFOD-D (Delta Force). He was a male Belgian Malinois and was named after late-night talk show host and comedian Conan O'Brien.[2] He was a veteran canine of the United States Special Operations Command (SOCOM), and served in 50 combat missions.[3]

Trump will put a stop to this! There will be American dogs, great American dogs, Delta force will no longer be dependant on Belgian dogs. The US will put a 100% tariff on EU dogs.

I predict no artist of any real repute will touch the Kennedy Center for a long time.
I'm not sure about this. Large groups like the major dance companies as well as chamber music groups might not have an alternative that makes as much financial sense. The KC has enough donated money to finance recitals by young classical musicians and singers who don't yet have the reputation to draw high-paying audiences. So there may be many artists who simply can't afford to pass up a paycheck from the Kennedy Center. Most artists in the classical performing arts are not getting rich.

Of course, they might not get the choice. There's no guarentee that classical music and dance will continue to be staged at current levels. Instead, they might have more "real American" performances.

No one goes into the arts to get rich (see avatar). Some lucky few strike it rich, but most simply hope to make a living.

The Kennedy Center's program has been funded by private donations and ticket sales, supplemented by the same government grants that every arts nonprofit receives. It also has an educational and outreach mission in the performing arts. What makes it special here is that the buildings and infrastructure are owned and maintained by the U.S. government, and it is considered a national venue. Hence there is some government-mandated direction. For comparison, many of the major performing venues in my city are owned by the county or state, so this is really not a

I believe a certain part of this behavior is Trump's ongoing fight against The Woke that he'll say infests arts and arts funding, and that these program should be featuring true American artists like Lee Greenwood. But the bigger part is far more personal. Trump 45 boycotted the very prestigious Kennedy Center Honors after some of its recipients criticized him. This isn't really an agenda item. They hurt Trump's wittle feelings so he's going to be petty and vindictive on a personal level.

Exactly. Personal revenge on petty slights. SO presidential.

Do you have any clue why she was fired? Are you aware that she allowed drag shows to be done at the Kennedy Center and had turned it into a left-wing lecture forum? She deserved to be fired.

...and you post a link to Fox News. Is this supposed to be serious or are you going for humour?

mike griffith presented that article as supporting evidence for his post, it there's no mention of drag shows, left wing lecture forums, or even why that woman was fired in it.

She hosted a small brunch for a couple of Washington drag queens. Not a drag show. Apparently it was this got Trump's giant spinnaker panties in a sweaty, fart-stained bunch. Meanwhile, there are hundreds of thousands of MAGA morons wearing bright neon facepaint and garish clothing at football games every weekend screaming themselves hoarse like five year olds. The hypocrisy is bottomless. ;)

The Touring company of 'Hamilton" justt announced they are canceliing next year's tour at Kennedy Center, and will seek a another venue in the DC/Baltimore area. So it begins.
