Ken "kenny boy" Lay indicted

Henceforth, as was the case with Ahmed Chalabi, George W. Bush and Kenneth Lay were merely "minor acquaintances"

Any attempt to portray them as "good friends" is hereby declared un-American and an "example of the vile filth spewing forth from the Left."

(I wonder how much Cheney swore when he heard the news )

The timing can't be going over too well in Bushville. :D

I figure Bush would love the timing... it shows him "getting tough" on corporate fraud going into an election (even if it does mean sacrificing a former "aquaintance".)

By the way, does anyone know the "official" reason for the delay? Did they want to gather more evidence or cut a few deals with underlings before going after Lay?

My understanding is that they have been slowly working their way up from middle management types up to the top, building a case and cutting a few deals here and there (e.g. Fastow)

That makes sense, although there have been a lot of people who have insinuated that Lay wasn't being prosecuted because of his friendship with Bush.

An apt moment to re-visit how Bush distanced himself from "Kenny boy"...

Bush: I got to know Ken Lay when he was the head of the—what they call the Governor's Business Council in Texas. He was a supporter of Ann Richards in my run in 1994. And she had named him the head of the Governor's Business Council. And I decided to leave him in place, just for the sake of continuity. And that's when I first got to know Ken.
Kenny Boy: When Governor Bush—now President Bush—decided to run for the governor's spot, [there was] a little difficult situation—I 'd worked very closely with Ann Richards also, the four years she was governor. But I was very close to George W. and had a lot of respect for him, had watched him over the years, particularly with reference to dealing with his father when his father was in the White House and some of the things he did to work for his father, and so did support him."

It's more than a friendship. Lay is Bush's biggest lifetime contributor. I think it would be hard to not prosecute Lay and not have it look like Bush had something to do with it. As evil sutko said, expect to see Bush suddenly forget what great buddies they were.

Suddenly?

Didn't Bush play the amnesia game as soon as the Enron story broke?

Ken Lay indicted? Nonsense. Every good psuedo-skeptic on this forum who leans left has repeatedly said Bush was in the pocket of people like Ken Lay and that Ken Lay would get away with things they themselves had no proof he did.

Of course, there are right leaning pseudo-skeptics on this forum who think other silly things, I have to throw in this disclaimer for some of the left leaning pseudo skeptics who will get mad.

Yep good old Clinton always around to be smeared when you need him. Never mind years and years of witchhunts on him have already turned up nothing.

Even if there was incidental involvement two wrongs don't make a right last time I checked.

Shame that this campaign season Bush won't be able to use the Enron jet again like he used in 2000.

Idiot.

Now I suppose you're going to trot out all the "Clinton played golf with Ken Lay in 1993" stories and all of that ridiculous bs that's supposed to deflect from the fact that Bush and his father were good friends with Lay.

Here's a preemptory shot over your big dumb bow:
Presidents Duel With Clubs!

President Clinton may have just squeaked his budget through Congress, but he has already returned to playing ball with the enemy.

Clinton began his vacation with a bipartisan golf match Saturday at the Country Club of the Rockies in Vail, Colo., teaming up with fellow Democrat (and golf pro) Jack Nicklaus to take on the Republican duo of former president Gerald Ford and Houston businessman Ken Lay.

During a photo op on the greens, Clinton was asked about the significance of a Democrat playing with a Republican. The eager putter responded: "It’s the way I’m going to try to run the rest of my administration. I don’t ever want the kind of polarization we had the last six months."

Jesus Christ man, Clinton has been out of public office for almost four years now. He's gone! Irrelevant! Makes bad jokes about pickles!
Do you really think that "well, Clinton was just as bad" is a good argument in favor of Bush? If it were Kerry in question, you might have a point.

Gee, is the CEO supposed to know what's going on?

CEOs indicted for malfeasance must realize how absurd they sound when claiming not to know what their corporations were up to. Here's Ken Lay, who founded Enron and was CEO during its large-scale raping of everyone in sight, saying he had no inkling of what was happening. Are we supposed to believe that CEOs are paid millions of bucks to be stupid? If that's the way it works, I'll be stupid for only about one mil a year, or even a little less if I get Fridays off.
