While I fully understand the principle behind this ruling, there is an irony here I simply find amusing. Perhaps I am the strange one to find this even more barbaric than the death penalty itself. I am sure there are/would be ramifications involved with allowing a prisoner to starve to death, even of his own accord, thus the above mentioned humor I find in it all.

I've read similar cases before, where a prisoner on Death Row is under heavy Suicide watch – to make sure the prisoner doesn't kill himself before his scheduled execution date. I'm sure I'm not the only one to see irony of it.
