This book by William Dunham is very good. It highlights some of the most amazing mathematical findings and the amazing mathematicians who worked on them.
The mathematicians from the chapter titles are Hippocrates, Euclid, Archimedes, Heron, Cardano, Newton, Bernoullis, Euler, and Cantor. Of course the book touches on many other findings and mathematicians too.
From one of the reviews on Amazon:
"You wonder if Dunham has a time machine hidden somewhere."
Too true.
