I just saw this weekend a rebroadcast from 4 years ago of an interview by John McLaughlin of SETI Carl Sagan Chair occupant Christopher Chyba. I wanted to bring it up because I'm so pleased in those rare moments when a mainstream journalist delves into issues of science with care, preparation, insight and depth.
Here's the transcript: http://www.mclaughlin.com/library/moo_transcript.asp?id=11
It also includes, by phone, a NASA astrobiologist and a paleontologist.
There are also some transcripts from the 2nd of a 2-parter he did last year re the nature of the universe:

McLaughlin, a former Jesuit priest who left to become an speechwriter for Nixon along with his buddy Pat Buchanan, is best known of course for his Sunday morning free-for-all political zoo with Montgomery Clift's sister-in-law and a bunch of other loudmouths. His "One on One" series, on PBS, was always preferable.
