I vaguely recall a story that Penn and Teller used an actress to portray a medium using cold reading to show that it is indeed a load of cobblers.A woman who received a favorable reading was told afterwards that it was a scam but refused to believe it even when it was explained how it was done. This was referred to as the Henrietta syndrome. A friend asked me where I got this information from and I don't seem to be able to find a link anywhere. Can anybody help or have I dreamt it?Harry

I remember they did a Bullsh*t episode about talking to the dead. The first episode actually, season 1 episode 1. I remember they staged a fake reading as well as going through a bunch of real ones and pick them apart. I'm guessing that the episode, aptly titled "Talking to the Dead" is somewhere on the internets.

It's actually the Henrietta syndrome bit I want to clarify as my friend thinks I imagened it and now I'm wondering if he's right.Harry

I rewatched the episode and didn't hear it, granted I wasn't devoting all of my faculties to the episode. I also googled it and couldn't find a thing. It sounds to me to be as real as the skills these people claim they have.

As far as I can remember it was a written piece about the incident rather than the program itself.Harry

I just heard it mentioned in The Skeptics Guide when I pulled up a random episode in the archive. I'll see if I can figure out which one it was and ETA it.

ETA: Might be episode 89 when they talk about the Fairy Hoax. http://www.theskepticsguide.org/archive.asp
