Like a lot of people I wince when Bush begins talking about nookyular weapans and nookyular fuels etc. But last night I was listening to Biologist discuss the nookyulus of a cell and listening to her talk about its nookyular membrane, etc. She has even less excuse than the president for her gaffe since she is talking within her own field

Am I going nuts or is this becomeing the normal way to pronounce the word? Or maybe in biology nookyulus and nookyular ARE correct?

You know I meant to post this in the Education forum, despite the fact that it has bush in the title I don't think this is politics. If any Mod wants to move it, feel free.

It's a regional and cultural thing. Different words are pronounced differently in different parts of the country (and world). Ever hear how they pronounce aluminum in Europe?

Did we really need a thread about this?(I know, it annoys the hell out of me, too.)

Aluminium is a different word from aluminum. Refers to the same stuff, but it is not just a difference in pronunciation.

There is the good old New Jersey approach of saying "bet-er" and "thet-er" instead of beta and theta.

Ha ha! You said nuclear. Its nucular dummy, the S is silent. - Peter Griffin

Well the brits confused me for a while with the way they say the letters (i.e. z = "zed")

We had a Nassau street next to campus, it got the inverse of the NASA treatment on a fairly regular basis.

"I'm glad to be back in Texas, whar people talk normal" Jeff Foxworthy.

I suppose it's all relative :)

Then the alphabet song doesn't rhyme:

Q- R - S
T - U - Vee
W - X
Y and Zed

Unless in britain v = ved :D
