A local preacher quoted, " In their defense the texts never claim to be historical or scientific writings and to use them as such leads to all sorts of embarrassing things such as young earth geology and the Scopes trial. "

Is that true?

IMO, the problem is not what the text claims, but what people claim the text claims. In that case, the preacher is right. The bible doesn't say it is historic or scientific--it's the followers (and dare I add, some theologians) who make such claims, and the preacher is right that this can lead to situations like Scopes and young earth geology.

Some folks try to make the bible bear more than it should. They are wrong to do so, but that is my opinion.
