Iraq conflict has killed a million, says survey

That's something on the order of 650 deaths per day. This is in excess of the normal death rate.

Yet a day comes along where 200 die, and that's catastrophic news. Something isn't adding up. 80%+ of these deaths are ones and twos here and there?

More than one million Iraqis have died as a result of the conflict in their country since the U.S.-led invasion in 2003, according to research conducted by one of Britain's leading polling groups.

This is laughable on its face and a dozen more reputable survey outfits put this one to bed long ago. Apparently their methods are...questionable.

Also, you know that they count EVERY death in Iraq since the invasion, whether in a car accident or a heart attack or a preemie baby's dying as "war-related."

I hope at least half of Americans think about the dead innocents when they fill up their SUV's gastank.
Funny no one ever says "I hope at least half of Americans think about the dead innocents when they heat their 3500 sq. ft. homes". Or "I hope at least half of Americans think about the dead innocents when they fly to Cancun for the weekend".

Not gonna happen.

I guess you had not heard the news.

America didn't go to war, the military went to war.

America went to the mall. Takes gas to get to the mall. More gas if you drive an SUV.

Me, I drive cars with better gas mileage, since I prefer to allocate money to other things, like beer.

Then maybe you ought to look up the term, again, and see if you can accrue any understanding.

Not bloody likely, but hope springs eternal.

Given the paucity of sources of information on the topic, it's not like there's a lot of other data to use. The IBC is useless. Three surveys by reputable sources, which are done use well accepted methods, come up with similar figures.

Again, that's 650 deaths per day, yet a day in which 200 die is catastrophic and broadcast loudly on the news.

Something isn't adding up.

20% of the Iraqis surveyed said that someone living under their roof died from violence related to the invasion and its aftermath? I'd want to know the names of these people so that the details of their deaths could be spot-checked, before accepting these reports as remotely accurate.

Can you cite such a day?

Do you think that the newspapers report every death? Do you think it's even remotely possible that the news reports today can know of every death that occurred yesterday?

Looking through the news today I see no reports of anyone dying in Iraq yesterday. Does that mean no one died in Iraq yesterday?

The news reports I've seen usually focus on attacks that kill large numbers. Maybe it's my poor memory, but I don't recall many articles that included sentences likes "and 13 other people died in 13 unrelated incidents". Yet, I doubt that there are no attacks that kill individual people.
