Wow.

Just Wow.

This is an awesome machine.

This is more like a mockup of what some futuristic machine ought to be than a real machine; It is much too perfect in every way.

The screen is bright and amazingly clear, even with teeny-tiny text.

The interface is intuitive.

The touchscreen works well.

It connected to my ancient non-Apple 802.11b network without issues.

It Sounds Wonderful.

I love it.

I have one, and I can't wait for the dev kit in February... It is suprisingly usable for web browsing, but I am peeved that there's no Java support in the browser.

java per se isn't really very heavyweight. Some of the class libraries are. You can run Java on a smart-card, after all.

What does the Touch give you that you don't get in, say, the Nano? I'm a sucker for new gadgets, but I tend to use my Nano for running and I like being able to change tracks without having to look at the screen. Is that possible with the Touch?

No, it isn't possible at all. As a matter of fact, there are times where I have trouble doing so even looking at the screen, as the controls sometime require a fairy high level of precision.

That said, it's a wonderful device that is quite fun to tinker with. Which is why I'm glad that Apple decided to follow common and release a SDK, rather than leave the device crippled.

The iPhone interface on the Touch is nice, but the comparatively small storage options (8/16GB) would lead me to spend my money on the larger capacity iPod Classic.

Well, it has been hacked to the point where it has all of the PDA features you could need, and there are lots of web apps for it now.

No, I don't think you can change tracks without looking. This is a visual machine that has no tactile feedback elements whatsoever.

Or try the Archos 605 WiFi range, which go up to 160Gb. Although they don't look as nice, and are much bigger (but with a much bigger screen). Much more suited to video on the go, than just as a MP3 player (you're not going to stick this in your trouser pocket ;)
I got the 30gb model for abbot the same prices as a 16gb Ipod touch.

It's great fun, and will be even better when the opera widgets plug-in comes out shortly. :)
And if you're willing to splash out a little more the the TV docking station, the whole thing turns into a personal digital video recorder. Nice.

(this post has been made from my 605)

ETA, and the 605 has a range of real buttons too, with raised sections so you can feel what they are- so you an change tracks without looking, and is great for the visually impared, apart from the fact that it's main function is to play video... )

Archos doe make some nice stuff.

How's the reliability? I've had trouble with portable hard drive mp3 players in the past. I think I must just treat them badly. I find the flash drives much sturdier (which is why I was tempted by the iTouch).

I still have the original (5 GB, scroll wheel, kinda chunky) iPod and it is on its last legs. I have had it since the first week of its release. The battery life has diminished to about an hour, the connector is kinda broken so I have to jiggle the cord around to get it to sound right, and the screen is increasingly hard to read. Also I have long since outgrown its capacity.

My wife bought me a new Classic 8GB for my birthday, and it seemed a huge step up from my current, but unfortunately it didn't work with my G4 Mac Desktop (which I have also outgrown) so I had to return it.

So now that Leopard has been released I am buying a new iMac and figure I'll thrown in a new iPod while I'm in spending mode.

My brother showed me his new iPhone and a friend showed me his new iPod touch and both were extremely cool ways to surf the web over WLAN, view videos, and do PDA stuff. But as an MP3 player I think I like the Classic better. I mostly use my iPod in the car or while working out, and neither lend itself well to the touch interface. Also I like the idea of an 80 GB device that costs $50 less than an 8GB device.

So I think the touch is way cooler but the Classic more useful for what I need it for.

I waited patiently for the touch-screen, wide-screen iPod but was disappointed when I saw the 8/16 GB capacities. I really wish they went the hard-drive route instead of flash memory. So again I will be patient and hope a 30 GB model will come out by this time next year. (though I hear flash memory is quite expensive so who knows when we'll see really large capacity flash iPods.)

Though I still get tempted to buy a low-capacity one every time I pass an Apple store. They are just too cool.
