I have a first-generation ipod shuffle and itunes 7.2 installed on my computer. itunes works great, but whenever I try to load new songs on my ipod, it closes itunes. Sometimes, whenever I even try to charge my ipod, itunes closes.

I've tried installing all the updates, but I'm still having trouble.

Anyone have any advice on this, short of buying a new ipod? Should I bring my problem into a mac store? Or is there anyone going to TAM who could give me some help?

And, no, my problem is NOT that I'm working on a mac. I love macs.

Thanks!!!

If it's the 1st generation 5GB iPod from 2002, then it will only work with Firewire, not USB. The USB-enabled iPods came out later. Try re-installing iTunes and if that doesn't work, back up your files, restore the iPod to factory conditions. If that doesn't work, then it may need a firmware update that an Apple store should be able to help with.

Good luck!

Michael

the 1st gen iPod Shuffles have USB. You're thinking of the straight 1st gen iPod.

Trying another port is a good idea, i see that work alot. Also plugging in directly to the computer seems to work better than going through a USB hub.

On the Mac's it's possible to reload the ipod software without opening iTunes (or it use to be) not sure on windows, but there maybe a standalone installer.

Also, try logging in as another user and see if it works for them.

Quite right--I didn't read the word "shuffle."

DUH!

Thanks, everyone. I'll keep giving it a try on my own. Otherwise, I'm dragging my computer into my local Mac store. I want my ipod to work and at Mac stores you can at least get help from actual people.

If anyone else has ideas, though, feel free to keep posting them!

That does seem like odd behavior. I don't know all the things you've tried so don't slap me too hard if I repeat something you've already done.

Have you tried shutting down the computer and then starting it back up. Then--without starting iTunes--connect the shuffle to the computer. If anything, doing so should START iTunes.

Also, I don't know what the traffic is at your Apple Store, but at mine, you're advised to set up an appointmen at midnight the day you hope to get in and be seen by a genius. The spots fill quickly, and you can't just drop in.

Good luck!

usually, unless "Enable Disk Use" is checked in the options for the iPod. I do reccommend flashing all the software on the ipod with the standalone updater. You should be able to find that in /Applications/Utilities or for download from the apple support site.

Yeah it is crazy insane! Kitten, go to the support site online and reserve a time in advance for you to go to the genius bar. That works best.

I don't think Enable Disk Use was available for shuffles, especially 1st gen. I thought that was a common complaint, that you couldn't use them as regular flash drives too.

heh, i'm spoiled here in Kansas City. Weekends are terrible, but tuesday/wednesday evening right around 5:30-6pm there is nobody in the store.
