iphoto alternative

I've tried searching for an iphoto alternative on google, but everything i've found is just a picture management program. What i need is a program to make those "holiday picture books". Like, those queer backgrounds with picture on them.


You can do them in iphoto, but you have to order them from apple instead of print them yourself...

So, does anyone know of an offline mac program that can do that...

On that note. Does anyone know a good cheap picture editing program for mac(normal gimp for mac is too stupid, imo, i haven't tried macgimp yet, is it usable? photoshop is nice but too expensive, and it doesn't need to be that complex).

??? I guess I don't understand the question. Are you creating an image in iPhoto and not able to print it out?

As I am going to get my Adobe certification over the summer, I gladly sing the praises of Photoshop and the like, BUT I have used MacGIMP and though I feel it's a little clunky in the user-friendly department, it is still usable and is well worth the cost (~$25USD if I remember correctly).

O'Reilly publishes a couple of books for GIMP, one general knowledge and another targeted to photographers. I haven't found another book that goes into enough detail on the program that I'm happy with.

I have a couple suggestions, but they may not be good ones. When you say photoshop is too expensive, I don't know if you're referring to any edition of Adobe Photoshop or something like Adobe Photoshop CS3. You could get Adobe Photoshop Elements which is geared toward photography and costs considerably less than other Photoshop versions I'm aware of. Alternately, you could get Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo XI. I sometimes browse through shareware and open source categories at the apple site. Possibly you might find a less expensive alternative there? I see Corel has a Photo Album program as well...

Disclaimer: Of the above programs, I've used only an ancient version of Elements and a not-as-ancient, but pre-CS version of Photoshop. But you could download demo versions of the above programs, probably.

I can try to look a bit more, but the books that you can create in iphoto, nope, can't figure out how to print them...

Hm, a bit clunky might be too much... :/ but since it only is 25$....

Well, yes, i was talking CS3... i didn't know elements was just a cut down version, i thought it was some addon or something...

I know there is a demo of CS3, so i can probably find one of elements as well. will give it a go... thanks :D
 
K, just checked, and yes, i can print them. I just got confused by the "buy" button in the bottom.. thought that was all i could do.

With that said, iphoto sucks(though iphoto light might help a bit), so does anyone know an alternative for that specific feature... or can it be done easily in photoshop/gimp?
 
I received Adobe Photoshop Elements 2.0 and Adobe Photoshop Album 2.0 as a Christmas gift several years ago. I actually prefer to use Paint Shop Pro to edit photos... But the Adobe Photoshop Album does have the capability to create individualized photo pages to print.

The Album capability has been included in the more recent versions of Photoshop Elements: http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshopelwin/

Since Corel bought Paint Shop Pro, I checked their website. They have a stand alone album program that creates pages to print for about $30:

Over the years we have had some funky bits of software we bought at Costco. One was Printshop, a program with several CDs of clip art and templates for greeting cards and posters. I used it to create invitations and birthday cars, and it even had some capability to import photos. That is something you could find in a place that sells out of date software like Half Price Books and Software (where I got an $8 copy of MasterCook 7.0).
 
I got a crazy idea earlier today.. why not make the albums in keynote.. offers total control :D

PSP exist for mac?? I never knew.. i'll look into it..

Picasa is windows only.

BTW, it isn't necessary to get this built into the application you choose for photo editing. There are several websites that will take uploaded photos and allow you to create books from them

mypublisher specifically lists Mac software for making books. If you're a costco member and go to costco's website first and into their photo area there is a link to mypublisher that gives a discount.
