I'm watching the live feed of Steve Jobs' announcement of the tablet. It doesn't look as if it has fundamentally different properties than other tablets on the market, but does seem to have very nice specifications and responsiveness.

Now that the rumors have all become official, just wondering if people think that this device will really shake up the market like the pundits were all projecting. It does look like a very hi-tech piece of equipment, essentially looks like a big iPod with a gorgeous display. I haven't seen the price yet but I assume it will be prohibitive (but so was the iPod and the iPhone and that didn't seem to be a problem for Apple.)

Any thoughts?

So far no e-reader demo. Amazon must be tipsy with joy.

Also, he picked a bunch of website/technologies to demo but none with Flash, hmmm. Jobs seems to be pretty focused on hyping the gaming platform properties, a la iPhone apps store, but I think it's a mistake for Apple to bet the farm on the computer gaming market.

No pricing announced yet, but I can see the anticipated revenues from app and music downloads subsidizing the street price a bit.

Hmmm, live TV baseball app looks pretty cool. Also the New York Times reader looked killer. Problem is each of these will have their own monthly fee. Still no mention of $$$. How many times can they ask their faithful minions to empty their piggy banks?

ETA: ah, here it comes, the iBook store. Trouble for Kindle.

I'm not clear what is so exciting and new about this compared to other tablet PCs.

It won't be trouble for Kindle. Why would it be?

I have a Kindle. On a charge, it can last a nice two weeks of reading if I keep the wireless off. I can hold it comfortably in one hand as its only slightly larger than a paperback. The e-ink is a little easier on the eyes than a backlit screen, though e-ink still has some contrast issues.

A lot depends on the ibook store, how many books it has, how much they cost, and what format they come in. Amazon already has a kindle app for the iphone/ipod touch. No reason why they wouldn't update it for use on the ipad.

The ipad, for book reading, will be better for colour magazines, and newspapers than the standard kindle, but I really doubt it will be a kindle killer, unless this tablet is seriously priced low.

In other news, the Onion News Network won the Million Dollar Challenge today.

:D

$499. Wow, not bad.

ETA: With 3G Wireless: $629/$729/$829. $14.99/month for 250 MB, $29.99 unlimited data. I think the app sales are indeed the big revenue plan on this one.

from Macworld's live update...

$499 for 16GB is the base model. For 32GB it's $100 more, for another $100 you get 64GB of storage. The 3G models cost an extra $130 to build in radios. $629, $729, $829. These are the six models. The most expensive model is $829.

eta: Grunion is faster than me. But to be fair I was typing mine on an iPad.

No visible camera or mention of one; No mention of multi-tasking; No mention of any phone capabilities.

Is there some reason why this device must be as capable as a desktop, a notebook, or other tablets? That seems to be a common attitude. Why can't different devices be intended for different purposes? Can somebody please explain this mentality?

Not to mention the unfortunate double-entendres that their chosen product name will no doubt evoke.
