No doubt you've seen this little window pop up, asking if you would like to "de-bug" or shut down IE on your own. But recently I've been seeing this little annoyance come up a little too often. Why is this happening and why now is it becoming much more frequent?

(OK, it's Needs, not Need --- hey, it's early.)

  1. Because it’s Internet Explorer. (I had to say it.)
  2. Probably because one of your plugins (e.g. Flash, Java) is outdated and flaky.
  3. Bad memory, or bad sectors on your hard drive.

It's really hard to say why it's failing - the message indicates a program fault. This can be due to the things TheDaver mentioned - hardware, old & unreliable plugins - but can also be due to software corruption or malware (spyware, virii, and so forth). There are just too many possibilities.

Software corruption and some malware can be fixed by reinstalling the affected application. I don't know if Windows provides a "reinstall" or "repair" option for IE - probably not, since Microsoft tied it into the OS. That means a reinstall of the operating system, which is a pain.

I suspect most computer techs will probably look for the standard options (i.e. do a scan for malware, test the hardware) and then reinstall the OS.
