The Jul 10 internet broadcast is available for download at:
JREF Internet Broadcast Archive on msspro

Jul 10, 2003
James Randi, Andrew Harter, Jack Latona
Time = 76:28 ; File size = 2,761KB

For Macintosh users who can't play the .wav files, here is a .mp3 file. (This file is 3 times as large and more distorted than the .wav file, so those who can play the .wav should ignore the .mp3.)
:)

Thanks

I always listen to these on Fridays at work - I usually don't listen to it live as I'm almost always doing something out of the house on Thursdays.

Just wanted to say thanks - I appreciate it :)

Now that I've got broadband I'm getting to listen to these, however...I'm on a Mac.

Please, please, please...either keep the mp3s coming (including the archived ones as you have time to convert) or stop using this newest damn .wav codec from MS (something version 9, I believe).

For some reason, no one is coming forward with a Mac port of this one and it's driving us nuts (Mac users, not JREFers).

Please please...Thank you, thank you.

MP3 larger than WAV ????

Hi, thanks for the archive, I have missed the show since they stopped archiving it on the web site and I am very exited to have found it again.

Just for my edification. since when are wav files smaller than mp3 ? I have been playing with these things for years and the entire ouroise of mp3 is to allow smaller size for ease of transference. Wav files are always 10 to 20 times the size of the equivalent mp3. What is it that I do not understand .

Thanks

Wendell

Though most .wav files you're likely to encounter are not compressed, there are various types of compression which are allowed within the .wav file type.

The sound compression used in these .wav files is something called ACELP.net made by VoiceAge. They license it to Microsoft who then incorporates it into the .wav file type.
According to the VoiceAge webpage, ACELP.net is "a proprietary product issued from the ACELP® technology, [which] has been integrated into software by companies such as Microsoft’s MediaPlayer®, and RealNetworks within its RealAudio® and RealVideo®. ACELP®.net is also the speech compression algorithm used for Audible® ready content."

As to why the acelp.net wav format is used, this is just the audio encoding format that is embedded in the live audio-video data stream. I use AsfTools to extract the sound stream and save it as a wav file.

By the way - I notice that this was your first post to the forum, so WELCOME TO THE JREF FORUM !!

I'm bumping this so the newbies can find out about the Internet Broadcast archive.

THANK YOU to all who were responsible for archiving the internet broadcasts for those of us who arrived late, so to speak. I've been slowly catching up myself not realizing, until seeing this thread a couple months ago or so, that the 2003 shows were archived (I've never heard a live broadcast yet, unfortunately). Thank you very much RCNelson for the link!

Two more programs to go and I'll finally be caught up!

The August 7 file appears to have no Randi whatsoever, and mostly seems to be a couple of Yanks I've never heard of rattling on about how amazing the USA is on account of Reagan's inspired economic administration.

WTF?

That'd be Jack & Andrew. Yes, they do that sometimes.
Still, I bet they're fun at parties.

Love the archive RCNelson! The shows IMHO don't age that well, but remain a fascinating character study and provide a nice 'Randi 101'. Bump until you can bump no more.;)
