The Zygar Deathwatch Thread

Today I received this email from my dad:

"Mom had a dream the other night that her mother came to our house and told her that you would not be here much longer. Sure hope that you are not going to leave us anytime soon. Mom is afraid to tell you, but I think you should know that she is really worried about this."

For context, my mom's Mom passed away a couple years ago.

I was absolutely flabergasted that my dad would send me this. For one thing, it is soooo wooful that I almost had to pick my jaw off the floor. And for another thing, my dad is telling me that I am going to die!

So, I put forth this thread. And I will daily check in for the period of 3 months. If for some reason I stop, please seek me out and determine the cause of death. If it is suicide, then I believe we should have an automatic exclusion. Otherwise, I think this should qualify as the preliminary test. :D

Don't worry. I'll be here in 3 months.

It doesn't sound to me like your dad is telling you that you are going to die. Nor does it sound like he believes it. It sounds like he is telling you that this dream has your mother spooked.

I don't believe in dream predictions, but I can certainly empathize with being spooked. I once had a dream that I was mugged, stabbed in the gut, and then had my throat slit. It was horrific, and it felt like I could actually feel the knife cutting me. It had me bothered for months.

You don't know my parents. They are both worried sick about this. But hey, why not worry about the imminent demise of your eldest son?

I'm sure if you die within 5 years, or move, or don't visit your mum often enough, it will end up as merely one more anecdote as "proof" of the paranormal.

True. That is why I added some parameters. Also, as I mentioned before, my parents are convinced that my death is imminent. As a result, I am sticking with the hypothesis that I have been prophesied to die.

Ok, so this is my first daily check-in. As you can tell, I am very alive. No close calls as of yet. Sorry everyone for disappointing you.

So who's disappointed? Hey, I don't get any of your stuff or anything! :D

I surely hope your parents do not believe ALL the dreams they have. That would be so confusing.......

my parents are convinced that my death is imminent.

Plenty of people believe the EOTWAWKI and the Day of Judgment is imminent.

But three months seems like such an arbitrary and unromantic definition of "much longer." I mean, it's like "one fiscal quarter" or "90 days."

Let's come up with a better definition of what "soon" means in this context. As plindboe remarked, even 5 years would be good enough anecdotal evidence for those who choose to believe in this stuff.

Let's take the Biblical lifespan of 70 years ("threescore and ten" from Psalms 90) and subtract your present age from it. The remainder may be considered your "natural" remaining lifespan.

Now take the standard statistical five percent as the mark of significance. In other words, if you make it to more than five percent of the remainder, then you have shown scientifically that such prophecies are nonsense. But if you die within that period, then your mother has passed the preliminary test of precognition, and may continue in her quest for the prize.

j/k, but I would personally feel good about the fact that your parents are close enough to you that they were willing to share this with you.

2.1 years. That's longer than I could possibly pay attention to this thread. I chose an arbitrary length of time that seemed both reasonable and meaningful to the prophesy.

Good point!

:D

I've had a few very scary, realistic dreams that have left me shaken. I don't believe in woo, but after an absolute nightmare that my (then toddler) son fell off the back of a boat and hit the running motor (complete with his bloody body floating) I put him at the front of the boat that whole summer. Yes, I know dreams are just our fears, etc, but still...our brains give us some powerful imagery sometimes.

Wait a minute. How do we know you're not posting from "the other side" right now? Huh?
