Idi is toast

Idi Amin was promptly buried in Saudi Arabia.

True trivia: Idi Amin had a double that appeared in his stead in many public events. The double was quite good, but once it was concluded that there was a double, members of the media made sport of trying to determine whether the man in the photos was Idi or his double. The double, whose real name was unknown, was nicknamed "Steve." The two men were thus known as "Steve and Idi."

One thing I find interesting is that Idi Amin was considered the most horrible person in the world at one point. The US vowed to punish him, as did Israel. Both did, to a large extent, but they never brought him to justice. He died (essentially of old age) in relative comfort.

Twenty years from now, will we read, only with mild curiosity, the same obituary for Saddam Hussein?

Interesting point, Tricky. I don't know the history of Idi Amin's life, but is it assumed that once these guys are removed from power that they just aren't very dangerous, or so it is hoped? I don't get it myself. Just because they lose the power to control an entire country doesn't mean that they can't still be dangerous on some level, and that they should just be forgotten (oh I'm sure plenty of people keep an eye on these "ex-dics"...). If we just let these guys off the hook, what kind of a message does that send to other would-be dictators? We need a good deterrent to keep all the "little Saddams" in school and off the streets! ;)

Then again, losing control of an entire country by force might be a huge thing for a man to handle hehe. Hell, I get severely bummed when the San Jose Sharks (hockey) lose a game, which is often. I can't imagine losing an entire nation! Perhaps Saddam will just suffer from depression and drink his life away. Isn't there some kind of "syndrome" for dictatorial postpartum depression? If not, I'm sure there will be. I kinda like mine...DPP...Dictatorial Postpartum Depression.

Maybe we should get Saddam on Paxil and......naaah.

Is anyone questioning why there is no outrage against Saudi Arabia for sheltering this terrorist madman for so many years? Why is it that we forgive the Saudi dictatorship for everything from mysogeny to breeding terrorists? Something seems wrong about our priorities.

I noticed this too, and I also wondered.

And of course if the US put sanctions on Saudi Arabia or anything, you would be the first to claim it was genocide...

What do you want to happen to Saudi Arabia?

Just curious...

Quotable Idi

includes quotes by others about Idi.

The depth of Amin's cruelty was matched only by the eccentricity of his behaviour. He declared himself King of Scotland, banned hippies and mini-skirts, and appeared at a royal Saudi Arabian funeral in 1975 wearing a kilt.

He awarded himself the Victoria Cross, offered to visit Northern Ireland as a peace mediator, and said that he, not the Queen, should be head of the Commonwealth.

some of my friends' grandfathers would agree on the banning of hippies, but not the mini-skirts.
