I was going to give it to my aged her but she doesn't want to pay for the downloads. I have to admit it does cost a lot of money to make this thing worthwhile. For Norton anti virus alone it costs 60.00 bucks. I might sell it because I have a good Dell laptop which is basically what an Ipad is.

You don't have to pay for an antivirus. There are no iOS viruses in the wild and if you are really paranoid there are free antivuses apps (at least there are for Android).

There really is no need to continue paying money for an iPad unless you want 3G service (if that is even an option on yours) or you come across paid apps that you want (there should be plenty of great free ones though).

I haven't decided what to do yet.

Just letting you know you don't have to spend money on it. For the record, if I won an iPad, I would probably sell it. I would rather have the $500 or whatever.

And there likely never will be. In order for code to run an iPad, it must either be blessed by Apple for general distribution, approved by Apple for distribution through the app store (in which case you must 'buy' it and Apple can kill switch it), or specifically authorized for your specific iPad using Apple's developmental portal (in which case you must manually install it).

PM me, and I send you a postal address where you can safely and easily dispose of your unwanted iPad. ;)

There are also a he'll of a lot of free apps and free books. It needn't cost much. The plan I'm on costs $A15 a month, and I never come close to using it all.

ETA That plan is when I'm away from home. Otherwise it accesses my home broadband.

You don't DESERVE an iPad. Hand it over.

If you don't think you'll really use it, just sell it for the cash. I'm sure someone will buy it. It's a nice toy, but $500 is a pretty sweet deal!

This isn't true. If the iPad is jailbroken it will run any code. Also, the security on a stock iOS device is by no means rock solid. For example, I recall an exploit that simply required the user to press a button on a web page to completely take over the device. This was used to jailbreak the devices of people who wanted it rather than for nefarious purposes though.

If I won an iPad, I'd hook it up to the wireless Wi-Fi in our apt and use it to check email and browse the web during the day without having to fire up the MacPro.

Years ago I had won a 'Palm Pilot III', which I didn't have a use for. The market price was $250, I sold it to a computer geek (and I mean that in a nice way) for $125. She was happy to get it for half price, and I was happy.

Now if I were to win an iPad, I would keep it, because I do have a use for that :)
