• Quick note - the problem with Youtube videos not embedding on the forum appears to have been fixed, thanks to ZiprHead. If you do still see problems let me know.

I wanna forum of my own!

Thanks for the ideas.

I already use 1&1 for a simple business website and I may try them because their customer service has been pretty good.
But ProBoards looks like an even easier first option so I'm going to set something up there and see how I get on.

Oh, I've just downloaded the software from myBB and phpBB.

My world is Mac not Wintel. That's OKAY, because myBB talks about *nix.

But we're straightaway into line commands and other stuff that is not monkey-friendly.
I have set up and administered vBull and myBB boards, and line commands were not necessary. Indeed, discouraged as modification tools, as an update would wipe out anything you customized that way.

(Unless you were referring to an initial install, in which case many ISPs or hosting companies will type that single line for you.)

Nevertheless, I'm glad you have found a solution. Let us know how it goes after you get your feet wet, and let's hope the water doesn't go much higher than your knees.

My reference to command line interfaces followed my reading this handy installation guide for myBB

http://docs.mybb.com/1.8/install/

User friendly? I think not. I thought at that point that I'd been silly to take this on.

Happier now.

A group that I have joined would like to set up a discussion forum just like his one, but I know nothing at all about the underlying mechanics.

1. Is the software a package one simply buys or acquires for free?

2. Does it require significant computer savvy to run it? The intermittent technical glitches that strike this forum suggest to me that some expertise is required, or is that because this forum is huge and if I just have a few dozen members then it is easy?
Try going here and clicking on the Create a Free Forum. It's pretty simple. And free.
The amount of time and effort depends on the number of participants and posts.

Hope this helps.

ETA: Ok I should have finished reading the thread before posting.

PhpBB was my choice, and it ran fine. The only flaw I found is that you can't follow a post to the post it quotes like you can with vBulletin.
