I just got polled by the NRA!

I was first asked if I thought the USA should be more like North Korea and Cuba. I asked in what way but was told I had to give a "yes" or "no" answer. I answered "no."

I was then asked if I thought Obama's plans to let North Korea and Cuba decide if we can "keep arms" is a good or a bad idea. Feeling somewhat insulted I decided to say "yes." After a bit of a silence they wished me a good day and hung up.

What the hell was that about?

And that is why I quit the NRA. I am strongly in favor of private gun ownership, but I resigned my membership when the NRA got heavily into Crackpot Conspiracy Theories.

Man, I almost hope they call me with this crap. I'd love to tell them "Yes, I believe the country would be better off if we followed the wisdom and leadership of the Dear Leader, Chairman Kim Jong-Il."

I often vote in the Republican primary in Texas. My reasoning is that the Republicans are almost invariably elected, so if I really want my vote to count, that's the GOP primary is the place where I can have the most say about who gets elected.

But as a result, I'm always getting "questionnaires" from the Texas GOP, the main question being, of course, "Will you give us some money?" I'm pretty sure they pay little attention to the others. But the others are very funny, much in the same vein as yours, with things like:
  • Do you want the government coming to take your guns away?
  • Do you want taxes raised to support people who refuse to work?
  • Should schools be allowed to teach that the US has been cowardly in wars?
  • Should illegal aliens be allowed to take jobs away from American citizens?
...and similarly hilarious stuff. I get a kick out of getting a dark marker and clearly picking all the wrong answers. Once I wrote them a check for zero dollars.

Wow. The push-polling is really subtle these days... :boggled:

I understood that was their intent but it still seemed stupid. What result could come from it?

98% of those polled think having North Korea decide gun ownership laws is a bad idea! Like duh. Of course I screwed with the data because of how obvious it was. I wonder how many others will too?

I too generally support legal gun ownership but it seems the NRA just dove into the deep end of the crazy pool.

Just zero? Not like negative dollars?

Bingo. I'm basically in the "don't make new laws, enforce the ones we have dammit" camp regarding gun laws, and while I don't personally care to own any guns I support the right of others to do so. To the NRA I would still qualify as an evil librul who wants to take all our guns away.

That isn't how the poll data will be presented, and if you're that surprised by the questions asked then I encourage you to keep that phone conversation in mind whenever you see poll data being touted as authoritative when it comes to political issues from this point forward. Leading questions like that are exactly how many polling places get the results they desire.

The likely presentation will probably be something like: 98% of Americans think that gun control laws are a bad idea. They will then post the results without the obviously stupid questions.

Does the UN decide if we can "keep arms"?

Would you want them to?

"This week the U.N. conference to "Prevent, combat, and eradicate the Illicit Trade in small arms and Light Weapons in All Aspects," which concludes today, puts these views in straightforward terms: Governments have the "right" to guns for "self defense and security needs." On the other hand, not one acceptable reason for individuals owning guns is mentioned.

Since the NRA failed to get your opinions, please do tell us the ways that you would like the U.S. to mimic North Korean and Cuba?

I wouldn't mind National Health Care.

Yes, but you also don't want healthcare that sucks.

It just might beat dying in your house because you can't afford to go to the hospital. Besides any deficiencies that North Korean or Cuban healthcare might have are linked to the insane economic policies of those countries.

Maybe it wasn't even a poll. Maybe they were just questions designed to fire up a certain segment of the population before they ask if you want to join and/or donate money to their cause??

If it was a real poll, however, all I can say is that whoever wrote the questions is totally nuts, no matter what position or association he represents.

I generally avoid telephone polls. They aren't very clever. This one, however, sounds full-scale stupid.

If it was legitimate research they would have soldiered on with the survey.

As other posters have already said, this was a fundraising call or membership drive or something similar posing as a survey to get its foot in your door.

I can't say I've got much time for organisations that engage in that kind of petty fraud.

They want to, and Obama wants to help them.

Obama revives talk of U.N. gun control

Since the mid-1990s, some sources have stated that the United Nations is trying to
disarm the world by taking control of all guns, including in particular, guns held by
private citizens in the United States.

The U.N. is after Americans’ Second Amendment gun rights — it wants gun
ownership banned in the U.S., and it’s not going to stop until it gets its way.

Do you think the NRA just randomly calls people to ask stupid questions? Oh wait, sorry. Of course you do.

The NRA generally only calls it's members. Not the general public. So unless Travis is a member, I doubt he really got the phone call.
