For me, the advantages would outwigh the disadvantages. For one, Britain (and NATO in that regard) would not rely on OPEC as much meaning that their monopoly could be challenged.
Secondly, Britain would have a greater place in the world economy. With oil revenues, it could encourage investment in the country as well as help ease its deficits and reduce spending cuts to boot.
Thirdly, It would ensure that Britain is not relevant in the world as it offers an alternative to the OPEC countries for the west.
And lastly, it can help develop the South American economies as Brazilian and British oil, which would possibly be of higher quality than say Venezuelan crude, is available at global markets at a lower rate.
