I'm getting tired of all the BS in my neck o' the woods, and I'd like to start a Skeptics' Society. Any suggestions?

Always begin with refreshments. That will increase interest, and raise the chance they'll come back.

I was trying to get some people together to start a skeptic society. It never happened though...

I kept telling them it was a good idea, but they were skeptical..

I, too, am a bit discouraged that cities smaller than mine, Houston, support monthly skeptic meetings.

My only suggestion is to look at places like Yahoo Groups ( http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SydneySkeptics/ ) or Meetup.Com ( http://skeptics.meetup.com/ ) to see if there are people already meeting in your area. If not, then these sites may be a useful way of forming a group.

Surely this board must contain members that are part of local skeptic meetings.

Chain yourself to some railings. That usually gets attention. Try to do it outside (if you do it in your living room there's a chance no-one will notice).

Failing that, a local newspaper? Whether an ad or a recruited journo, might make people notice. You could at least irritate the local cold readers by contaminating their organ, so to speak (if your local paper is as uncritical as mine).

Failing that, come to my house. I have railings, and beer.

I've had similar experiences. I was going to join the Optimists Club, but I didn't think they'd take me. And I've been meaning to start a Procrastinors Club, but just haven't gotten around to it.

So, how's chances of limiting the number of wisea$$ comments to three times the number of useful comments? I can handle a signal to noise ratio of 1:3.

If you feel compelled to smart off, then include some useful information before cracking wise.

Ladewig - Haven't you seen any Kilik threads? Or the one on kundalini? Very low signal to noise.
(Sorry. I just really liked the South Park reference...)

Yes, but when Kilik starts a thread no one expects useful things to come out of it. This topic is worthy of discussion.
