Go to youtube and type in "Ni##er Brown and C##n Cheese Should Their Names Change?"

I've been told that ni##er is not a very offensive word in Australia and that's why no one bothered to file a complaint about Ni##er Stadium, other than an Aboriginal man by the name of Stephen Hagan. The Federal Government told the United Nations that the word "ni##er" may be used publicly without necessarily being racially offensive. The government asked the UN to dismiss a complaint brought by Stephen Hagan. Well, Hagan won recently, thank god, but he went through hell for nine years. He received death threats and the local paper actually encouraged people to throw tomatoes at him. Now he's taking on C##n cheese. Why is this man despised by so many?

Not Australian, but I do have an intense dislike for petty small-minded people who think their personal feelings give them the right to punish anyone they disagree with or ban anything they find to be offensive.

He is despised because he is an idiot. This sort of politically correct grandstanding does nothing for indigenous Australians. It simply alienates people, and is simply counter-productive.

I am not at all surprised that the UN backed this guy. It has been a joke for a long time. Look up the number of anti-Israeli resolutions vs anti-Arabic nations resolutions if you want an illustration of this. The government should simply ignore the UN's findings, but it is gutless in matters like this and I wouldn't be surprised if it rolls over.

It's correct that the word 'ni##er' is little used or complained about as a racist term here in OZ, but where I grew up, if you said 'coon' too loudly in some parts of town, you'd get the s##t kicked out of you.

I dislike the cheese, btw. It's too mild for my taste.

For people not familiar with the issue, the "N-word" stand (not stadium) was named after E. S. "N-word" Brown. He was given the nickname as a young'un because of his pale skin.

Yes, I think it's pretty stupid that I have to censor that guy's nickname to placate hypothetical enraged USians.

I wouldn't support a stand being named that way today, but I also see absolutely no good coming out of censoring the names of historical figures with nicknames that became rude after their death.

Similarly since Coon cheese stopped using aboriginals in its advertising before I was born, I see absolutely no good coming out of censoring the name now. I think Hagan's efforts at stirring up controversy are purely an attempt to get attention.

I think the idea to change the name of Coon cheese is just silly. I don't know the history of the name, but suspect that it was simply the name of any early producer by that name, of the cheese and had no racial overtones at all.

I don't really like history being re-written...

I had never heard of the stadium before today (and I lived in Cairns for a year - which is only a few hours drive from Townsville where the stadium is) - so don't really have a feeling about it. However, the guy it was named after back in the 20's (apparently) DID have that nickname - why should the name he was known as be changed now?

Incidentally, the name of Guy Gibson's (of "Dambusters" fame) dog was "******", and was to Gibson, a significant part of his life.

Should we re-write history on that one as well?

This is almost as silly as that person in the Washington mayor's office who was kicked out his job some years ago for using the word "niggardly" in a sentence....

No one bothered to get a dictionary out at the time to see what the word actually meant! It just sounded wrong...

Stephen moved to the Department of Foreign Affairs where he was posted as a diplomat to Colombo. He represented his people at several international forums in India and the West Indies. He spent time with Mother Theresa in Calcutta working among the destitute.

In September 2005 he received the Deadly Award at the Opera House, Sydney for Outstanding Achievement in Literature for his published non-fiction book - The N Word, One Man's Stand.

He does sound like a stupid, awful man. Those death threats certainly are warranted.

The dog's name was also used as the codeword for the successful breaching of the Moehne Dam, but it was edited out of the movie the last time I watched it.

Is it correct that the Coon chesse was named after the farmer that developed it and the Rugby player got his nickname because he used a brand of hair cream called "N-word Brown"?

If so, big difference.

We visited Hoover Dam last year. The dam had a dog mascot during construction. The dog died during the construction, and was buried on the site. There's a plaque marking his grave. I noticed that the plaque doesn't mention this "beloved" animal's name, and I speculated to our group that his name was probably something like "S---head."

I was wrong, but I had the right general idea.

Are you in fact confirming that the nickname was given in reference to the ratial epitath? If so, how can you think it's ok?

What an aboslutely disgusting thing to say. Shame shame shame on you.

Coon cheese was named after Edward Coon who apparently developed a process for maturing cheese quickly using Humidity and temperature.

N-Word Brown's name apparently came from a shoe polish apparently. So you're close.

In World of Warcraft, players can buy pets like cats and birds and such. Non-combat vanity pets that just follow you around and make girls go "awww!"

There used to be a Maine Coon Cat pet in the game, and it's still there, but now its name is "black tabby." Someone complained about "coon."

I recently noticed a new trend in the game, and wonder if it's going on out there in the real world: any time someone in the game says the word "black" now, in any context, a handful of people start screaming "racist!" and laughing.

It's pretty damned annoying.

It seems to be a teenage sort of thing. Last week when my high school students were afraid of N1H1 I told them as long as a sick, Mexican pig doesn't sneeze on you, you'll be fine. One of the kids called me a racist. I told him to get back to me when he could explain how one can be racist against a pig.

For the record, Hagan said the cheese used to have a black wraparound and was named Coon as a joke. "I want Dairy Farmers to show me the evidence of Edward Coon being honoured an honorary doctorate and what year he received that honorary doctorate," he said. "If they can prove to me that Edward Coon was a famous cheesemaker, I will drop my campaign.

Sounds reasonable.

By the way, is the Ni##er Brown sign still there? If it is, I think Kevin Rudd should invite Obama and the black South Africans living in Australia to check it out. They would be most impressed.

Damn pc seppos.

Vague, rhetorical questions are mostly used to get out of having to state an actual argument.

Rather than ask me how I can think it is okay, how about you explain to us why you think the name of the stand should have been changed?
