We have a signed contract with the Stardust Hotel for the next Amaz!ng Meeting and they are ready to start accepting reservations, either by telephone or online. The Stardust is one of the older hotels on the Strip, but the West Tower rooms have been renovated and I think you'll be very pleased. They're not as big as the Tuscany, but they're very nice. Our block is designated as Deluxe Tower accommodations and our code word is "Amazing".

Rates are $60 for weekdays and $90 for Friday and Saturday, plus tax. There is also a mandatory $1.00 per room charge per day for telephone service. At least it's not $1.00 per CALL as it was at the Tuscany! These rates are for single or double occupancy; there is an additional $20 per night for a third person.

If you'd like to upgrade to a spa suite (which I can personally recommend, as we stayed in one on our last visit), it's only an extra $50 per night.

To make reservations, call (800) 634-6757 and indicate you are with Group Code Amazing. The first night's room and tax will be required at the time of booking. The cutoff date for these rates is December 14, 2004. The website address is www.stardustlv.com.

If you run into any problems, let me know. I'll have an online registration form up on our website as soon as Jeff gets my new secure shopping cart up and running and as soon as we finalize the workshop and any other events, like a special fund-raising dinner or show tickets as we did last year.

I've already spotted a problem I have to resolve. If you go to their online reservations, you don't have an option to select a date past December of this year. I'll find out when Jan. will be available for online booking.

Linda,

Good work.

But.

Personally, I don't care - sorry to say, but really: I don't come to TAMx for the hotel amenities, I come there for TAM! I will be travelling across the bleedin' planet for this, so I am not looking for luxuries.

All I need is a bed, wide, clean. The room has to be safe, quiet, cool, clean, no bugs, running hot water. If possible, central to TAM, but no big deal if a cab is needed.

It ain't no holiday, it's TAM!

(But OK, it's still nice...I still have a grandmother to dig up and sell for medical experiments to raise the money... :) )

For all you sports bettors, I believe the Stardust still has one of the finest sports betting parlors in the world.

If you like Wayne Newton, well, he works at the Stardust!

The Stardust also features an old-style sign out front. In the '70s, the Stardust sign was one of the flashiest on the Strip, and it's still pretty flashy today.

Additional info about the hotel is available from Vegas. com. This web site supposedly allows booking for 2005, but I haven't checked that out personally. The "reservations hot line" is (800) 851-1703.

The room rates are pretty reasonable--in comparison--for a hotel that can accommodate a convention. The dollar-per-day phone charge is not as bad as it sounds. Many fine shows accept reservations exclusively by telephone. (For example, I paid a personal visit to Lance Burton's theatre box office at the Monte Carlo to reserve a ticket for his show, and I was told that I had to make reservations by phone!)

Stray thought:

As a fund-raising (raisin??) effort, we tell Linda what we would like, let Linda book our hotel room at the most convenient time, and pay her an additional fee for JREF.

What's it gonna cost, Linda? (Heck, it'll be a major convenience for me...) 10 bucks? 20 bucks?

Wayne NEwton?

cool....no really he's almost as much of an icon as Elvis in Vegas.

May I decline? I don't want the responsibility and I can't promise I'll have the time. And, since they will need a credit card to charge the first night's room and tax at the time of the reservation, I might have a problem as a third party. Thanks for the effort to raise more funds for JREF, but no thanks. ;)

That $60 weeknight rate is good for the days before and after the conference for those of you making a week of it.

Yuck!!! That guy makes my skin crawl.

He came halfway around the world to entertain me and the other crewmen on the battleship at Diego Garcia in '87.

Wayne's OK in my book.

When Karl and I went back to Vegas at the end of February to scout out the location for TAM 3, we stayed at the Stardust for part of our trip, and Wayne Newton was dark that week. We were just as glad, as we knew we would have been offered tickets to his show and neither of us wanted to see him. BUT, I have heard that he has a lot of really good performers on stage with him, and puts on a terrific show, so now I wouldn't turn down an opportunity to see him...if for no other reason than he's an institution in Vegas, and one of the sights one really should see before he's gone.

I totally agree. Wayne Newton is Vegas. When Pool Boy and I looked at the web site for the hotel, he said, "wow! Don
Rickles is coming, I thought he was dead!" Still, I wouldn't mind seeing Wayne Newton or Don Rickles. They may not be high tech, but they are old Vegas.

Oooh, the suites look really nice. Though I should find someone to share one with.

Errgh. I don't recommend Rickles. Saw him a couple of months ago. BIG dissapointment, unfortunately.

When would be the latest I should get my arse into gear and book? I do want to go, and have the opportunity to (plans are to work UK until December holidays, save up until then, and return home to Oz via TAM3). But obviously it's still a while off, and events are liable to change in my life between now and then.

Could I aim to organise things about October and still get some good deals?

Hey! If you're going down from Calgary, I might be able to take same flights and go with you and share a room. That would make the cost in half at least for the room.

Will you be taking a plane? I haven't looked into bookings yet.

Well, I've just been browsing the online ticket services, and it appears a flight to Los Angeles is actually 35$ cheaper than a flight to Las Vegas (Although that doesn't include the various airport taxes yet). But since I was already wondering if it might be a feasible idea to try and visit a friend in California while in the US, I may be begging the Southern California Skeptics for a ride to TAM III in 6 months :D (I will chip in for gas of course).

I've always wanted to make a road trip ... :D

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind. Although I think I still have a few months to work out the wrinkles of the whole thing, so no hurry ;)
