You too can make a mint because A) there's a sucker born every second (or less) and B)nobody ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the general public. Truly rules to live by.

These are not original - but have been constantly verified by actual experience of this observer.

Actual attribution:

"There is a sucker born every minute" (P. T. Barnum, 19th cen. Connecticut philosopher)

"No one ever went broke over-estimating the vulgarity of the American public." (H. L. Menken "The Sage of Baltimore" early 20th cen.)

To which I might add:

"25% of the people are retards!" (Parker and Stone, 21st cen. American animators and dramatists)

"Yeah, at least 25%"(Parker and Stone, 21st cen. American animators and dramatists)

And, if you adjust for the changes in population and birth rate since 1870, it turns out that there are now approximately 2.4 suckers born every minute.

They're gaining on us.:)

Wrong. Barnum never said that. It was said by George Hannum, who bought the original faked Cardiff Man from farmer Hull. P.T. had faked a copy of the fake and got involved with a lawsuit with Hannem.
As a fellow Nutmegger, I have read a lot about old P.T.

Ooops. A bit late.
But Hannum was not a victim. He knew it was a hoax when he bought the original fake. He sued P.T. for faking the fake and saying he had the original and Hannum had the fake.
By the way, I saw the original fake at the Farmer's Museum in Cooperstown. Or maybe it was the fake fake. But you had to be pretty naive to think that that was a petrified giant.

Yes, a lot of people do buy this crap. My mother-in-law bought some "special" nightlights from an energy worker for $40 a piece. They were supposed to attract and absorb stray EMF's in our house and help us avoid getting sick. They were also supposed to lessen the power of ghosts, aliens and I'm sure numerous other evil things.
