So, you've written that check to the Red Cross. What next?
We had a "family meeting" about what else we could do.
We already drive fairly small cars (one small car, one medium sized one). We decided to try to consolidate trips to town (we live about 10 miles from the nearest town), not just to save money but to "help out". We also decided to take some showers instead of baths (we love baths) and how to control heating our home this winter (we like most of New England have heating oil). It isn't just about the money. We have a small well insulated house (though we are adding more this month in an effort to help) and sure the prices are going to be pretty high this winter. But by lowering our use of gas and home heating oil, we hope to help keep prices lower for those that can't afford to heat their homes or drive their car to work.
Probably pretty naive.
Still, I wonder why Bush hasn't said, "ok, if everyone tried to drive a little less, we could easily make up this shortage."
Or how about asking business if they can, to allow their employees to work one day at home each week for a month?
Or a real tax break for people buying smaller cars (opps, there is a glut of big cars, gotta move them....
)
We are also going to put some stuff on ebay to sell so we can make a really nice donation to the groups in our area that help the poor to heat their homes in the winter. With prices what they will be, I hate to think about how cold some people are going to get. I know people that received help last year, and to be honest, they are in despair about this winter.
My daughter pointed out that Katrina hit ALL of us. So it's up to ALL of us to change the way we do things to help out.
