Report: Hastert's office warned about Foley two years ago

POSTED: 4:24 p.m. EDT, October 4, 2006

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A senior congressional aide said Wednesday he told House Speaker Dennis Hastert's office in 2004 about worrisome conduct by former Rep. Mark Foley with teenage pages -- the earliest known alert to the GOP leadership.

Kirk Fordham told The Associated Press that when he was told about Foley's inappropriate behavior toward pages, he had "more than one conversation with senior staff at the highest level of the House of Representatives asking them to intervene."

The conversations took place long before the e-mail scandal broke, Fordham said, and at least a year earlier than members of the House GOP leadership have acknowledged.

Fordham resigned Wednesday as chief of staff to Rep. Thomas Reynolds, R-New York.

Fordham spoke to the AP after ABC News quoted unidentified GOP sources as insinuating that he had intervened on behalf of Foley, his former boss, to prevent an inquiry into Foley's conduct.

"This is categorically false," Fordham said. "At no point ever did I ask anyone to block any inquiries into Foley's actions or behavior."

The longtime Capitol Hill aide said he would fully disclose to the FBI and the House ethics committee "any and all meetings and phone calls" regarding Foley's behavior that he had with senior staffers in the House leadership.

"The fact is even prior to the existence of the Foley e-mail exchanges I had more than one conversation with senior staff at the highest level of the House of Representatives asking them to intervene when I was informed of Mr. Foley's inappropriate behavior," Fordham said.

Report: Hastert's office shocked by D-Foley's transgressions

POSTED: 4:24 p.m. EDT, October 4, 2006

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A senior congressional aide said Wednesday he didn't tell House Speaker Dennis Hastert's office in 2004 about worrisome conduct by former Rep. Mark Foley with teenage pages -- the earliest known alert to the GOP leadership.

Kirk Fordham told The Associated Press that when he was told about Foley's inappropriate behavior toward pages, he had "absolutely no conversations with senior staff at the highest level of the House of Representatives asking them to intervene."

The conversations took place long after the e-mail scandal broke, Fordham said, and at the same time members of the House GOP leadership have acknowledged all along.

Fordham resigned Wednesday as chief of staff to Rep. Thomas Reynolds, R-New York.

Fordham spoke to the AP after ABC News quoted unidentified GOP sources as insinuating that he hadn't intervened on behalf of Foley, his former boss, and didn't prevent any inquiry into Foley's conduct.

"This is categorically true," Fordham said. "At no point ever did I ask anyone to block any inquiries into Democratic Representative Foley's actions or behavior."

The longtime Capitol Hill aide said he would fully disclose to the FBI and the House ethics committee "any and all meetings and phone calls" regarding Foley's behavior that he had with senior staffers in the House leadership.

"The fact is even prior to the existence of the Foley e-mail exchanges I never had any conversations with senior staff at the highest level of the House of Representatives asking them to intervene because I wasn't informed of Mr. Foley's inappropriate behavior," Fordham said.

When asked for comment, former Democratic Representative Foley stated, "I would've gotten away with it too if it weren't for you righteous and God frearing Republicans! How dare you ruin our, and by our I mean the Democratic party, AKA NAMBLA, plans to give abortions to under age children, make religion illegal, and create a communist dictatorship!

You caught me a little slow on the uptake today, Bob - I actually went to your link to see whether or not Faux was trying to tie Foley to the Democrats again and whether NAMBLA was planning a D.C. convention. ;)

Three say Hastert knew of e-mails

Flip-Flopping Denny
On Monday, Hastert said: "I think Foley resigned almost immediately upon the outbreak of this information, and so we really didn't have a chance to ask him to resign, and I left at the very end of the session, almost, before the very last vote."

But during Tuesday’s radio interview with Rush Limbaugh, he seemed to change his story, saying: "We found out about it, asked him to resign. He did resign. He's gone." He then repeated that line in a Tuesday interview with Sean Hannity.

Blood in the water
Human Events, a conservative national weekly, will call on House Republicans to elect new leaders in an edition that goes to press tomorrow, said Tom Winter, the editor-in-chief.

"We think the Republicans need new leaders, and I don't think Hastert will be there much longer,'' Winter said. "I think he has to do this for the team, he has to step down.''

Hasterts toast

Prediction - Hastert steps down as Speaker tomorrow (Thursday) or Friday.

Actually, I think that Hastert seems to be a pretty decent guy and he seems to be the type to fall on his sword if it will help the party (i.e, help the Republicans win in Nov). Plus, I never thought that Hastert actually ran the House. That was Delays job. Hastert seemed to be more of the pleasant frontman to put a good face on the Republican (Delay) controlled house.

I can't help but envision a long line of Republican Congressmen taking a number for the next in line. :)

I wonder if they pick their personal scandal out of a hat, or if they've already chosen the circumstances that will mean their downfall. ;)
