I use Hoaxbusters as one of the sites to check forwards against for hoaxes. Anyway, I was scanning through the list when I came across this one about Jane Fonda and it's link to this article. I found the article fairly interesting because I wasn't fully aware of the origin of the nickname nor that she had publically appologized for her comments (albeit 16 years later).

Anyway, thought I'd share.

Geez, what do you do in your spare time, poke sleeping dogs with sticks :)

Looking to get your afternoon NTW fix ;)

wait for it.....

The story around 'Hanoi Jane' is also covered in snopes:
http://www.snopes.com/military/fonda.htm

The biggest allegations made against her (which turned out to be false) was that she handed over notes given to her by American POWs in Vietnam to their captors. However, some of the things which she did do:
- Toured North Vietnam, having her picture taken in North Vietnamese equipment
- Claimed that there was no torture or starvation in North Vietnamese POW camps
- Said returning POWs were 'liars'

On the Jane Fonda apology:
from Snopes:
It's interesting to note that this nationally-televised apology (during which she attempted to minimize her actions by characterizing them as "thoughtless and careless") came at a time when New England vets were successfully disrupting a film project she was working on. It's also interesting that not only was this apology delivered sixteen years after the fact, but it has not been offered again since

heh. Honestly not my intent. However, I suppose I am a little curious to how many people knew the facts from the fiction.

I wasn't familiar with the nickname until I started listening to conservative talk radio shows, specifically Dr. Laura, I think. But I think I've also heard Michael Savage use the name too.

Yeah, reading snopes, I find I had a pretty clear indication of the difference between fact and fiction in this case.

She's... not one of my favorite personalities, to put it politely.

In the pantheon of dumass dupes of communism, she's certainly earned her stripes.

I can't imagine how she could have done worse. If it was a mistake, she sure could have done a lot more to make up for it.

If I were her, I'd devote the rest of my life to Veteran's issues.

From page 2 of the article:

"Jon E. Dougherty, a columnist for WorldNetDaily.com, saw fit to quote a version of the message verbatim in his September 15, 1999 column entitled "Not saluting Jane Fonda." emphasis mine

Gosh, anyone surprised at the connection between WorldNetDaily and "anti-left" rumor mongering? Me either.
