US troops 'made Aristide leave'

From correspondents in Paris
March 1, 2004

HAITIAN leader Jean Bertrand Aristide was taken away from his home by US soldiers, it was claimed today.

A man who said he was a caretaker for the now exiled president told France's RTL radio station the troops forced Aristide out.

"The American army came to take him away at two in the morning," the man said.

"The Americans forced him out with weapons.

"It was American soldiers. They came with a helicopter and they took the security guards.

So...

The Haitian President was a DEMOCRATICALLY elected official...and WE were the ones who militarilly removed him from power...?

And people say we are 'hypocritical' in our foreign policy...?

One could also claim that they saved his life. By not putting him on a plane, Aristide would be chopped liver by now. Literally.

Would Aristide as chopped liver be a better solution to you, KOA?

'I'...

...heard him say over the air to Wolf Blitzer that he would NOT bend to these "terrorists striving to violently overthrow his democratically elected rule".

He claimed his death would serve the Democratic cause.

I didn't ask what Aristide said. I asked what you thought.

You're the one complaining.

And you can cut that megalomaniacal "I"-crap.

I thought America was supposed to back democracy, not escort deposed rulers from their nation so that drug dealers can take over?

Drudge does have a good record on reporting the news fast, but he has a rather poor record at reporting the news accurately.

I expect what happened is that the USA offered to escort Aristide to exile and the rather tenuous situation in Haiti convinced him to accept the help. The below new account is more informative of the details.

Aristide Arrives in Central Africa

BANGUI, Central African Republic - Former Haitian President Jean-Bertrand Aristide arrived in the Central African Republic Monday, fleeing Haiti under an asylum offer negotiated by France and the United States, the government here said.

...

The ousted Haitian president's arrival solved the immediate mystery of Aristide's whereabouts after his weekend flight from Haiti, where rebels were moving in upon the capital.

...

It's an American led coup happening under our very own eyes while the mainstream media everywhere spin the usual story: Unstable country in uproar. UN peace keeping forced to be moved in to save those poor people from themselves.
Not one word that this is part of the Bush administration's effort to clean up what it considers its backyard. Cuba watch out.

Aristide wanted to bring in laws to make wealthy sweatshop owners in Haiti pay tax. So they had to get rid of him and it was the US that did it for them.

The little I've seen of the BBC's coverage (on BBC World) has been almost surreally uninformative. Five full minutes into their news report, they mentioned for the first time (in passing) that Aristide - the country's first and only democratically elected leader - had been "accompanied" onto the plane by US Marines after being given "what amounted to an ultimatum" by unnamed "American officials". Then we were treated to more pictures of capering natives indulging in "anarchy", thus demonstrating the urgent need for a strong hand to restore order.
No background which is incredible (and seriously lacking in most of the discussions on Haiti on this forum too I might add), no context, no explanation of what might possibly be motivating all these lamentably excitable foreigners. Maybe someone had been sticking pins in their effigies...

Here's a gem from "Q&A", on the BBC website, which purports to "explain the issues behind the unrest in the Caribbean state of Haiti". (The name "Duvalier" is never once mentioned in the entire screed.)

quote:
_________________________________________________
"How bad is the situation?

Chief Justice Alexandre Boniface has taken over as interim leader in a process laid out in the Haitian constitution, but there remain fears of a political vacuum.

The political opposition, which is not linked to the rebels [!], has tried to present itself as a viable alternative to Mr Aristide.

They are concerned [!] that the rebels who forced Mr Aristide to go are little more than armed gangs without any defined political beliefs.

Amid the confusion..."

"Confusion" is putting it mildly. I've seen more informative episodes of Teletubbies.
"... and it's over to Tinky Winky at the Hague."

With U.S. military forces already on the ground in the Caribbean nation and more on the way, chief presidential spokesman Scott McClellan said, "It's nonsense, and conspiracy theories do nothing to help the Haitian people move forward to a better more free, more prosperous future."

The secretary said Aristide wrote a letter of resignation and only then did the United States bring an airplane to help him leave the country.

Rrrriiiiggghhhtttt....I would wait for the whole story before calling in the conspiracy theorists. Most likely a case of misunderstanding and/or a possible axe to grind?

"Most likely a case of misunderstanding "??? ffs!

EXCLUSIVE BREAKING NEWS:
PRESIDENT ARISTIDE SAYS 'I WAS KIDNAPPED'
'TELL THE WORLD IT IS A COUP'

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Multiple sources that just spoke with Haitian President Jean-Bertrand Aristide told Democracy Now! that Aristide says he was "kidnapped" and taken by force to the Central African Republic. Congressmember Maxine Waters said she received a call from Aristide at 9am EST. "He's surrounded by military. It's like he is in jail, he said. He says he was kidnapped," said Waters. She said he had been threatened by what he called US diplomats. According to Waters, the diplomats reportedly told the Haitian president that if he did not leave Haiti, paramilitary leader Guy Philippe would storm the palace and Aristide would be killed. According to Waters, Aristide was told by the US that they were withdrawing Aristide's US security.
TransAfrica founder and close Aristide family friend Randall Robinson also received a call from the Haitian president early this morning and confirmed Waters account. Robinson said that Aristide "emphatically" denied that he had resigned. "He did not resign," he said. "He was abducted by the United States in the commission of a coup." Robinson says he spoke to Aristide on a cell phone that was smuggled to the Haitian president.

Aristide is his own worst witness. The man is either crazy or retarded. If he says he was kidnapped, I would need good evidence to corroborate it. It could just be a political ploy.

If the US really kidnapped him, I doubt they would let him say so on the friggin phone.

At least stories like this make the undercover woo-woos on the forum show their true colors.

You know, I was thinking exactly the same thing.

It is always vital to describe people as "crazy or retarded", so that you can avoid thinking.

Why are "rat", "crazy" and "retarded" apt descriptions of Aristide?
