PHYSICIANS vs. GUN OWNERS

Physicians:
a. The number of physicians in the U.S. is 700,000.
b. Accidental deaths caused by Physicians per year are 120,000.
c. Accidental deaths per physician is 0.171.
(Statistics courtesy of U.S. Dept. of Health & Human Services)

Now think about this . . .

Guns:
a. The number of gun owners in the U.S. is 80,000,000.
b. The number of accidental gun deaths per year (all age groups) is
1,500.
c. The number of accidental deaths per gun owner is 0.000188.

Statistically, doctors are approximately 9,000 times more dangerous than gun owners.

Remember, "Guns don't kill people; doctors do."

FACT: NOT EVERYONE HAS A GUN, BUT ALMOST EVERYONE HAS AT LEAST ONE DOCTOR!

And doctors cost a heckuva lot more than guns.

100% of the people who drink water - die. Think about that before you take another drink of water!

Where do you come by your numbers? Usually people here post source links when using statistics to put forth an argument.

How about non-accidential gun deaths?

Actually more than half of all gun deaths in the U.S. are suicides. Most of the remaining are criminal homicides. Relatively few of them are accidental.

What a silly OP!

Can you be more specific as to the source of your data? It sounds very incorrect to me.

I poked around the "U.S. Dept. of Health & Human Services" web site a bit and I could not find the information that your stated.

Thanks much!

I would suggest the next time you seek medical attention you should consult a gun smith.

It's not silly because the AMA is constantly bleating about accidental gun deaths.

They should clean up their own house first, literally. Tens of thousands of people die every year from infections they contracted in hospitals due to unsanitary conditions. It's amazing how many doctors and nurses don't wash their hands between patients.

From a chain email. I have had it sent to me before. It is the equivalent of argument by funny (possible)factoid.

1) The above numbers are not right.

2) Practicing medicine is a lot harder than shooting a gun.

An estimated 80,000 patients per year develop catheter-related bloodstream infections, or CRBSIs -- which can occur when tubes that are inserted into a vein to monitor blood flow or deliver medication and nutrients are improperly prepared or left in longer than necessary. About 30,000 patients die as a result, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, accounting for nearly a third of annual deaths from hospital-acquired infections in the United States.

Yet evidence suggests hospital workers could all but eliminate CRBSIs by following a five-step checklist that is stunningly basic: (1) Wash hands with soap; (2) clean patient's skin with an effective antiseptic; (3) put sterile drapes over the entire patient; (4) wear a sterile mask, hat, gown and gloves; (5) put a sterile dressing over the catheter site.

Tht's 30,000 deaths a year from CRBSI alone, 20 times the number of accidental gun deaths.

And then:
Sepsis and pneumonia, two infections that can often be prevented with tight infection control practices in hospitals, killed 48,000 patients and added $8.1 billion to heath care costs in 2006 alone, according to a study published today in the Archives of Internal Medicine.
