Certainly a big step in the right direction. We did something similar here in New Zealand after the Christchurch mosque Shootings. An Aussie was responsible for that one too.

My brother is a keen hunter and gun enthusiast, but he could see the sense of this measure even though he had to hand in his new 'assault rifle'. Background checks are really stiff here now. The police did a background check on me too, and interviewed me with questions about my experience with guns and relationship with my brother. They also inspected his gun safe to make sure that it was secure.
