I've noticed Gordon Smith crop up a lot recently, and he's a far more, um, impressive medium than most I've seen. I think he's hot reading, and he seems particularly good at it. I was wondering if anyone knows if he's ever been caught out?

Gordon Smith - The Psychic Barber?
http://www.thepsychicbarber.co.uk
as tested by the Scottish Society for Psychical Research, a genuine research society that has this in it's research:
Historical psychical research covers many topics but it is a fact that the careful and prolonged studies by psychical researchers, sometimes over decades, of mediums such as Mrs Piper, Mrs Leonard, Mrs Willett, Mrs Garrett and Miss Cummins have demonstrated beyond any reasonable doubt to anyone of open mind that these psychics again and again could acquire knowledge in a paranormal manner. The majority of the psychical researchers who participated in such studies or who came later into psychical research and studied carefully the detailed, thoughtful, numerous and varied case reports in the literature, concluded that unless one accepted a variation of super-telepathy and clairvoyance, the possibility that some human beings survive death, retaining their essential personalities, memory, characteristics, skills, and concern for those they have left behind, had to be taken very seriously indeed.

Yep, that's him.

Well, the Scottish Society for Psychical Research is clearly a bastion of scientific rigor, and thus I withdraw my opinion Smith is hot reading. :D

Yeah, I've seen him be quite impressive too. Hot reading is of course the natural conclusion, as the clips I've seen go beyond cold/warm reading. He seems a fairly likeable fellow too, good at appearing genuine, with a Blairite aptitude for going "hey, I'm just an ordinary guy, this is what I want you to believe...", in that unsettlingly disarming fashion.

I wonder what it would take to get him in a proper lab.

Thanks Mojo, that's interesting. :)

Nucular, I agree, he's disarming and charismatic. Hence my interest, I think he's more convincing than many mediums and therefore more troublesome.

Then again, if people can be convinced by Acorah ( :boggled: )and Fry ( :eye-poppi ), you clearly don't need that much charm...

He is the resident psychic for Best, Bella or Womens Weekly magazines. One of them anyway. You send a letter in and he replys with amazing details, alonght lines of, "As Soon As I opened your letter I could feel your mother with me..." In responce to a letter that was asking about getting in touch with someones mother. I f I had to hazard a guess I would say he is a cheat. And knowingly so.

Those magazines scare me they are so full of all sorts of woo, from diet woo, to medical woo, to psychic woo, to beauty tips woo. I can't believe that people actually take them seriously, or rather I hope so.

Yep, I think they're designed to turn your brain to sludge.

Gordon Smith - a medium who claims not to make any money from his 'talent'.
...or has he changed his tune now?

I see he is the new Psychic in residence for Living TV's comedy of errors known as 'Most Haunted'. Now that Derek has left the building I suspect we shall be hearing a lot more of our magical Barber...let's hope he doesn't have too many 'close shaves' with made up names or locations (like his predecessor seemed to).

From my list above:Keith Hall! Isnt that the psychic detective who Randi made mincemeat of on TV,Psychics Exposed? WHo has a name like Janet Birdseye?! ;)

Is he really? So is that other guy who was on the show while Derek was there not being groomed to take over?

Ah, I hope Smith is on that show - everything I've seem of him so far has been very select highlights, there should be much less opportunity for him to do that - plus badpsychics.co.uk will have have a field day

No Nucular,Gordon Smith is officially the new host of Most Haunted and as you say seeing him live will be a blast.I may even watch an episode-a first for me! ;)

He does not hot read, that is a lame excuse. It just happens that sometimes the spirits come through clearer than others. Sometimes in Gordon’s shows some spirits are able to give the full names of all the family, specific dates, addresses and national insurance numbers while other spirits struggle to get the letter of the name of the person they want to speak to through. He can’t be blamed for the bad connection.

Having said that he also cold reads very well. He is also good at distressing his sitter and capitalising on their grief. I have seen him give some very specific details to the lachrymose sitter while the audience sits open mouthed at the incredible detail. However interviews with the sitter later inform us that not all the details given were correct, which is not the impression left after watching the reading.

For the first time ever I'm sorry I don't have cable. I'd like to see that. I got to see Most Haunted a few times at relatives homes, and I think he will be quite different to Acorah.

I’ve only ever seen Gordon Smith on TV (so no reliable info on how well he reads) and he does seem very personable, unlike many so-called mediums. He plays the humility card well.

When I first saw him, I too thought that if there were any of the current crop of TV mediums that could be really popular, it would be Gordon. Of course, being in the spotlight, which now seems likely, will bring a lot of scrutiny upon him.

I wonder how long it will be before he makes his first big blunder. :D
