Does any one know of a good search engine optimiser (SEO) company? Or does any one here do it?

I have a friend in Bulgaria who sells property to People from England. He keeps getting cold called by companys in England claiming they can get him to no.1 on Google. After quick searches on Google, i find that most of these companys are not in fact number 1 themselves. They tend to be below forums that are bad mouthing them!

He already has a website up and running, so just needs someone to tinker with the layout, keywords, links etc to get him up there. I think he's on page 3 billion at the moment!

Cheers

I don't think Google works in quite that way - tinkering with the site itself won't help the ranking, you need to be linked to by other relevant sites.

It is possible to fake your way up to the top, of course, but I don't know of anyone reputable. Possibly the easiest way would be to get a Google Advert .

I set up a google advert for him about 6 months ago. It was great at first but then other companys started doing the same and he started dissapearing down the list. He's now having to pay about 100 pounds a month to maintain his position in the adverts.

Also some unknown unscrupulous company has been clicking his advert to bust his daily limit.

The timeless practice of tricking google into giving a page a high rankings is called google bombing. Back in '01 some guy (Adam Mathes) figured out how the ranking algorithm worked and made his friend's homepage be the first return (to take advantage of the I feel lucky button) for "talentless hack". Since then there have been lots of such bombs, like "french military victories," and "miserable failure."

Donks, your are right. Google use diferent spiders to go out and search the web. From what I understand, they are giving a lot of weight towards blog sites.

Have yout friend find sites that permit you to add your site if you add theirs on yours. Also, go to as many blogs sites as you can and add the site there too. Takes 2 to 3 weeks, but it works.

Many of them are scams, and those that aren't often charge a whole lot of money to do something that most people can do themselves with a bit of effort. Anyone who "guarantees" a certain search engine ranking, BTW, is blowing hot air.

I do recommend one SEO expert, Brad Fallon: Stomping the Search Engines. His 48-minute free audiotape shares several very useful tips; his paid package goes into a lot more depth, and includes access to a forum for sharing ideas. If you have the money, you can also hire him.

He did not start out as an SEO expert; he started out as a guy who, through a lot of trial and error, figured out how to make his wife's wedding favors business shoot to No. 1 on Google (it's still No. 1).

I have no financial ties to him whatsoever, except that he got some of my money. :) I'm a Web developer, and I recommend him to clients who are looking for some solid SEO tips.

The number one common-sense search engine strategy, at least for Google, is to get a lot of links to you from sites that get heavy traffic, preferably sites in the same field/genre as yours.

Search Engine Watch also has some tips, and news on what the major search engines are up to.
