Ok.

So I pull up to a stoplight yesterday and there a group of people looking for loose change. I don't know if they do this everywhere in the country, but in Chicagoland a lot of time Charity organizations will take over an intersection and try to raise funds. The majority of the time this is religious groups.

I usually don't give to religious organizations, this one was 'keeping kids off of drugs and the street' by setting up youth groups and camps and crap, but mainly I just wanted one of the blue raspberry Airheads they were giving away. So I gave my change and got my Airhead and a sheet, but it got me to thinking...

Would you rather have your kid smoking pot or believing in religion?

Cheese and Rice! I would kick their asses good for either one. Granted it is probably easier to get them off of pot, but I refuse to choose the lesser of two evils. Would you rather have your left arm chopped off by an axe or your left arm chopped off by a machete?

How is it you failed to have a "both" for an answer?

The two are not mutually exclusive.

DR

It is one or the other in this poll!

All pot so far....Lets let it ride then do a follow up with 'harder' drugs...Like booze.

Believing in God can mean so many different things.

It doesn't have to mean a "personal loving" God who interacts with people here on the planet performing "miracles" or a vengeful God who wants his followers to convert/kill all the "infidels".

A child of mine could believe only that God was behind the "Big Bang" and I wouldn't have a problem with that.

So I will be the first to vote for "believe in God".

This is really like comparing apples and oranges...

Could have been 'Religion vs Peeping Tom', in which case I'd have to vote for 'Peeping Tom', at least it's interest in reality.

Take a sizeable chunk of text that defends belief in God. Substitute 'smoke pot' and variations for 'belief' and variations. Does it make any difference?

Example: God is everywhere, and you'd see it if you'd just smoke a bowl.

...that whosoever smoketh pot with him shall not perish, but have everlasting life.

It's not that simple. I want them to make good decisions once they are adults. While I find the occasional recreational MJ use to be more reasonable than, say, becoming an evangelical, I prefer they not do anything that can lead them to being arrested. No matter how silly the law, I would hope I had taught them to evaluate the risks of their choices.

Not far from the Rastafarians, is it?

Smoking pot is much more detrimental to the minds of people than religion from my perspective. Of course it depends on the person but overall I wouldn't mind having a child who was religious but would worry about the pot smoker.

Getting high and going to church can be fun, but I don't know how sober people do it.

And unlike a belief in God, a drug related offense could limit their career choices in the future.... say if they wanted to get a degree as a pharmacist, a degree in medicine or if they wanted to be a Supreme Court justice.:)

I'm thinking along the lines of Miss Anthrope.
I voted belief, for the simple reason not to do illegal drugs (whether they should be or not is another question - prohibition made alcohol illegal, but many people still did it).
I would hopefully change their minds later.

Axe.

I say new poll.

Agreed.

If this forum is getting to the point where illegal drug use is considerd a preferable behavior in your child than religious belief, then we need to ask Randi to change the forum name to IIDBv2.0.

Yeah, I'm gonna have to vote God, too. I can't convince myself that believing in God would be worse than committing a crime. You picked an ostensibly innocent crime, but in truth the MJ trade perpetuates gang violence and other serious crimes just as the "hard drug" trades do. The violence is committed by the people who sell it, not the people who smoke it. But the people who smoke it keep the people who sell it in business.

So, reluctantly, I choose God. However, I still subscribe to the "gateway belief theory" that belief in God leads to more dangerous beliefs, such as belief in marriage.
