Ghost Lab Forums: Be nice or else.

Well. Having seen "Ghost Lab" recently, I decided to hop on their forums and point out a few problems I had seen. Namely, the show purporting itself to be some kind of serious scientific examination when no sign of any adherence to any sort of scientific method is evident anywhere. I made my own initial post, then responded to a handful of other posts. I followed the forum rules, didn't use expletives anywhere, and mainly just stated that the show shouldn't tout itself as a scientific investigation when science isn't being used.

That lasted maybe an hour or two. Next thing I know, every single post I had written was removed, my ability to post removed (I now have to wait for moderator approval. I'm assuming it's the same moderator who gagged me to start with.), and I honestly have no idea why.

But, this post is mainly just a heads up to anyone else who may be posting there; It seems if you post anything that isn't approval for the show, you will be gagged.

It wasn't a moderator who removed the posts it was a ghost.
 
Interesting. I've also posted in the Mythbusters and Dirty Jobs forums (love those shows!) and every post I've made in those has been removed as well. I guess I'm going to have to email someone at Discovery Channel and file a complaint. If a moderator there took issue with one of my posts, deleting everything I've ever said on ANY show without warning is beyond reason!

Was it the one about hair growing on your palms when you masturbate? Because I've submitted that one a bunch of times to no avail. I even offered to be on the team with Kari to test it.

Where I'm from (Eastern Pennsylvania) there's this idea that flat ginger ale can cure fever / stomach discomfort ailments. There's also a weed out here (no idea what the name of it is) that has tiny yellow flowers and has a yellowish sap that seems to get rid of warts more than twice faster than over-the-counter topical ointments.
 
Sent in an Email to the Discovery Channel "Viewer relations" office detailing the issue along with my complaint. The system tells me I'll get a response in ten days. Hrm... I wonder if a moderator didn't get all angry when I criticized "Ghost Lab". Maybe it was my use of the word "Weed" in my myth suggestion for Mythbusters. Maybe.

Getting everything I've ever written deleted seems above and beyond a reasonable response, though.

On another board a few years back, I had a discussion with Brad Klinge; his understanding of science seemed limited to how the word is spelled. And I'm being kind.
 
Why not ask mythbusters to investigate the story about the disappearing emails?
 
To be fair, those discussion boards are run by for-profit organizations with the intention of appealing to their audience. They have a duty to their shareholders and advertisers to create an environment that best increases the value of the entertainment they provide. I have no problems with that, and I'm not surprised your posts were removed.

My suggestion would be to take a much more subtle approach. Try to gently guide the discussion to the points you want to make, preferably by getting "regulars" to ask the hard questions you'd like to see asked. They still might delete posts, but I think you stand a better chance if the threads seem to "naturally" head a certain way.

tep 1 Find a "hot sight" AKA secluded place inhabited by people that believe in ghosts (aka nobody or rednecks/morons)

Step 2 Release electricity into the air

Step 3 Measure the electricity you just released and claim it is caused by ghosts.

Step 4 Any noise, change in temperature, fart, or animal, or fencepost, is a GHOST

Step 5 Before a commercial break, have a door close or something and start FLIPPING ****

Step 6 in a trailer full of laptops and TVs displaying irrelevant bar graphs and Matrix numbers everywhere in an attempt to convince the average viewer that SCIENCE is involved, conclude that there were GHOSTS and that you acquired solid EVIDENCE such as a soundbyte of one of your crew members mumbling or a picture of a fence post.

I have wondered why the various ghost hunters don't just set up a table and a nice tea set, turn on a recorder, and say..."Lets have a nice chat!"

Thats pretty awful, but par for the course. Ironicaly the old Mos Haunted forums did welcome sceptics, and we had some good open ended debates there. Stll not all ghost hunters are afraid to discuss there ideas! :) I'm here after all :)

Drama. They need the "jump out of the seat" play-acting to keep an audience. You can see them working that frequently, "oops! I'm supposed to be scared right now!" Clumsy manipulation of their audience, but television shows are required to insult your intelligence.
