General UK politics VIII - The Last Tory

I'll be glad when I can stop having to watch Sunak talking ***** about Labour tax rises of £2,000, day after sodding day. Never have I shouted at my screen as much as in the last few weeks.

Kemi Badenoch and Suella Braverman have registered Tory leadership campaign websites.

Eager to be in charge of the burning dustbin

Farage "accidentally" does far right thing. Again

Whoops. Silly him. Not a dog whistle. He has no idea why he has to keep brushing off all these racists and Nazis. Inexplicable

"I was dressing in a hurry to get to a meeting and my tan trousers and beige shirt were the first things to come to hand and with the rain the night before boots were an obvious choice. I know everyone's making a big deal about the swastika armband, but I simply pulled it on because it brought the outfit together in a fun and colorful way. The thought that it might have any kind of connotations at all never occurred to me and I think it's disgusting the way the press have published out of context photos of me performing my medically recommended arm and leg raising exercises on the way to the office."

Paywalled. What did he do?

I got a free view, apparently.
A video, which has now been removed, posted on Farage’s Twitter/X account on June 5 featured a slowed-down version of L’Amour Toujours, a 1999 Italian disco hit, as background to an interview with Richard Holden, the Conservative chairman, and then a speech by the Reform UK leader.

However, the song has been banned across Europe for its far-right connotations after multiple viral videos showed Germans signing “Germany for the Germans, foreigners out” over the song’s refrain.

It seemed a reasonable explanation by Farage.
Farage seems principled and intelligent from a distance.
He accurately predicted RU from a way back.
He seems to understand biology and sovereignty.
Mr 25 percent of the popular vote might be accorded more than abject contempt maybe?

But he didn't explain it. Re-read what he said.

By all means show us your measures.

He accurately predicted RU from a way back.
Predicted what?
He seems to understand biology and sovereignty.
Evidence?

Are you talking his time as an MEP?

Farage is a racist, Fascist homophobic liar.

No wonder you like him.

To both above, I enjoy listening to Farage, with no particular dog in the fight.
He was adamant that Russia would go Ukraine if Nato continued rhetoric, and was of course proven correct. This is a prediction and not a validation.
He drove Brexit in favor of secure borders, which result was squandered by Johnson.
I am sketching here, but I hope you all take a God's eye view, a notional abstraction that is always helpful to me.

It is true that I like him.
I doubt he is homophobic, but certainly a liar because this describes politicians with moving lips.
If you could link to specific instances of homophobia and mendacity we can pursue a sensible discussion.

Evidence? That either happened.

No he didn't want foreigners - well apart from his wife, and the guys who clean his car, and those Poles that built the new extension, and the lovely Vietnamese girls at the nail boutique that do his wife's nails....

You are making up crap is what it seems to be to me.

You're happy with the racism and Fascism, though?

Perhaps best not let this non-serious poster derail the thread, eh?
The odd thing is I am a serious poster.
I see Farage as a wholly legitimate politician with a huge following.
You are oblivious to the notion you are in an echo chamber.

No, you aren't.

You look for sources that conform to your bigotry and ignore those that challenge it.

So Farage was party to the Alex Jones nonsense.
I have read the guardian article, and see no confirmation of Anti semitism, but more accurately accusations of Islamiphobia. On that subject I applaud Aayan Hirsi Ali and Sam Harris etc.

Post about Twitter bots

Left: Oliver Dowden warning about twitter bots supporting Reform and affecting the general election

Right: Data shows thousands of Russian bots affecting the Brexit referendum

David Cameron, Theresa May, Boris Johnson, Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak have all ignored advice from Parliament's Security and Intelligence Committee to investigate the effect of Russian influence in Brexit

But now, that Reform are benefiting from the bots, and the Conservatives are not, they are suddenly warning about Russian influence in our democracy?

Ed Davy's been out living his best life again today. Bungee jumping this morning. Whether he returns to Parliament as Leader of the Opposition on Friday or not he'll definitely be handing in the best "What I did on my Holidays" essay.

As well as the best party political broadcast in many years, a politician actually coming across as human.

And Britain maybe correctly discards 21% of the plebiscite by delivering 1 to 7 seats in a 650 house chamber.
Rules is rules, I have no vote.

It very much depends. If that 21% is evenly spread across the country then yes, they wouldn't win many (if any) seats in a FPTP system.

OTOH if they have local focus like SNP, Plaid or the NI parties then low single digits of the national vote can deliver a disproportionately large number of seats.
