Don't worry, progressives: I'm using a right-wing source, so you can safely ignore the poll results.

From The Hill, via JWF:

Nearly six in 10 Americans, 58 percent, say they have a favorable view of the NRA, while 35 percent hold an unfavorable one, according to the latest Gallup poll released Thursday.

Gallup: Obama's approval rating.

One more twist of the partisan knife:

To be fair, Obama’s approval has ticked up slightly since we first noted this, probably as a result of him being on vacation. His latest whining about guns will probably drive that down again. Now he’s threatening members of his own party that don’t support his gun confiscation efforts. Just pathetic.

Wow, that's so exciting. More guns more killing. Sleep well America (with one eye open).

Edit - bravo to another gun nutter thread. Yee Haw shoot em up.

And more people believe in angels than in vaccination. Popularity isn't the determinant of good.

You damn well know that if the poll was the other way around there be plenty of people here touting it

Indeed. I think the same poll showed a majority of Americans in favor of stricter gun control.

Both sides can pick what they want to trumpet.

Yet strangely enough, many of the people who "support" the NRA actually disagree with many of the stances it actually holds. For example, the NRA is against universal background checks. Yet more than 80% of Americans support such checks.

My take is that the two parties are the divisive ones, NOT the American citizen. Most Americans LIKE to have an armed populace, hence the poll being positive to the NRA.

But both parties want the rhetoric, just to raise $$$. Even Obama's latest will have little to no effect, but it is stirring the pot. Which is good for all three institutions- Rep, Dem, and NRA.

Which, if true, shows that he is a loose cannon who does not reflect the wishes of the democrat voters. And likewise is not so good at building a coaliation of support, even within his own party.

Yeah. This may be people approving of some romanticized version of the NRA. I suspect most of these supporters simply think of the NRA as a generic "defender of gun rights", having only heard vapid soundbites like "Good Guy With a Gun", and lack a deeper knowledge of the various positions held by the organization.

Also, Obama gets more attention than the NRA.

And that's where they got it wrong. I don't see any effort by Obama to confiscate guns.

Then maybe if a sensible background check bill was introduced it would pass. Unfortunately all the claimed "background check" bills proposed since Sandy Hook go far beyond that and include registration and are written in such a way that to hand a friend a pistol to shoot at the range would require a background check.

Except when he supports "assault weapon" bans, right? Oh, and when he said he supported a ban on handguns when he was running for Illinois State Senate?

So he doesn't want to ban all guns, just the most popular ones. :boggled:

Do you not know the difference between supporting something and taking efforts to do that same thing? I haven't seen any active legislation aimed at taking any gun away from anyone.

Are you saying Obama hasn't been taking action to try to get Congress to pass an "assault weapon" ban?

Or are you saying no one should get upset about it until it actually passes?

eta: and do you admit he lied when he said he didn't want to take away anyone's guns?
