Benjamin Franklin’s obsession with the turkey did not end with his recommendation that it represent the fledgling United States as its national bird. In 1749, he showed that he could kill and roast a turkey with electricity, the result being an “uncommonly tender” meal. He writes: “A turkey is to be killed for our dinner by the electrical shock, and roasted by the electrical jack, before a fire kindled by the electrified bottle…”

In this letter, written on December 25, 1750, Boston native Benjamin Franklin described an interesting electrical experiment that did not go quite as he had planned:

"I have lately made an Experiment in Electricity that I desire never to repeat. Two nights ago being about to kill a Turkey by the Shock from two large Glass Jarrs containing as much electrical fire as forty common Phials, I inadvertently took the whole thro' my own Arms and Body."

Years ago...burned a pinhole from the pad of my thumb through and out the center of the nail when I picked up the removed circuit board of a small laser. Discharged the capacitor. Probably a quick 15-20k volts.

There's me, shaking my hand, hopping around, grunting DAMN...DAMN...DAMN.
