Francis Collins steps down--

Well... why do you think he stepped down--
He's head of the genome project, but he's an evangelical Christian...

How does he rectify "common descent" with original sin which Jesus supposedly atoned for?

I've always been curious myself. I just wonder if the cognitive dissonance made him go haywire. I think it would be hard to maintain the faith when the facts keep staring you in the face, ya know?

Here's a recent clip of Richard Dawkins on Real Time with Bill Maher. Around 2:45 in they discuss Francis Collins:

DAWKINS: When you meet a scientist who claims to be religious, if you say do you really believe in the talking snake, most of them will say no. Most of them will be religious in a much more nebulous sense than that. They'll vaguely believe in some sort of spirit that motivates the universe or something like that. They won't really believe in all of the details in the book of Genesis. I must say I don't think that Francis Collins believes that. I think you've got to give him credit for maybe he believes in some kind of god. Maybe he even believes in Jesus Christ. But I don't think you'll find he believes in the talking snake.

MAHER: I interviewed him and he absolutely does.

DAWKINS: He does? In that case, he goes right down in my estimation. He's not a bright guy!

He does not believe in a talking snake as far as i know: I have one of his books, in which he attacks Creationism and ID as "blasphemous" - his word not mine. :)

Why do you assume his motivation is religious? See cj's post, please.

Because he is 58 years old and probably has made a nice chunk to retire on. In fact, he states in the article, if you read it, he was looking forward to taking a sabbatical from public service. He also wants to write more books. He is probably tired of idiots speculating about why he is religious instead of talking about his actual work.

God forbid anyone care about an actual issue for once
