France - Macron reelected

Congratulations to Macron on being marginally better than the worst living French person.

I note that Putin has congratulated Macron.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has congratulated Emmanuel Macron on his re-election, Moscow has said.

According to a statement from the Kremlin, Putin's telegram wished French President Macron success in "state activities, as well as good health and well-being".

Is this an attempt to drive a wedge between Macron and the rest of the pro-Ukraine alliance ?

I'd have thought that Putin would more naturally aligned with Le Pen but perhaps he didn't want to be explicit in his support ?

Phew !

I mean he was absolutely the lesser of two evils, but the lesser by a considerable margin.

Despite being French, living in France and not being rich nor famous, I still don't understand the level of detestation for Macron since even before he was elected the first time...

I mean, I'm certainly not enamoured with any French politician, or any particular French political faction, but compared to the last two clowns we had previously, or to Le Pen or Melenchon and their fascination for dictators and tyrans all over the world, I fail to see how Macron is the Big Satan who is going to sell France to its arch-enemies, whoever they are …

Macron won by a margin of almost 60/40, which in politics is a blowout. What I find odd is, he's the first incumbent French president to win reelection since Jacques Chirac in 2002.

Two reasons IMO: Sarkozy and Hollande were truly inept, and voters with functioning braincells, even those loathing Macron, couldn't resolve themselves to see LePen elected, considering her positions on several subjects like death penalty or her links to Orban and Putin and the risks for the EU and the war in Ukraine.

Last weekend I found myself shouting at the radio in the car when a report on the choices in front of supporters of Melenchon featured a bunch of them saying that they hated Le Pen but felt physically sick at the idea of voting for Macron, so abstention was the only choice for them.

I'm viewing the "good health and well-being" comment as a threat. Macron needs to get a bunch of food-tasters into the Elysée, pronto.

makes you feel great about the future to see all these centrist liberals seeming to struggle to hold back the rising tide of right wing fascist movements. /s

A ghoul like Le Pen being within striking distance of taking power is quite the warning siren.

Yeah, but 40% voting fascist is a pretty worrying sign.

When Chirac won in 2002, he got 82% of the vote against Le Pen (pere).

So now we can see how far the fascists have crept up to power, despite Marine Le Pen giving her fascist party an unconvincing make-over.

We elected Trump. I can’t imagine anything more mond-boggling. I know nothing of Le Pen or French politics in general, but it seems to me that the far-right is making steady inroads many places.

The far right makes all the hollow promises, blaming boogiemen and scapegoats for the very real problems of today, that they always do, and the centrist libs barely deign to recognize there is even a reason for people to be upset. It's a real recipe for fascist takeover.

She falls in the category of Trump, Orban, Erdogan, Maduro, Farage, Putin etc.
National socialism.
"They" are bad and stealing "our" glory and keeping the common man down. Once in power the money suddenly flows to cronies and all bad things are attributed to a local boogeyman. And that opens the road to destroying freedom of press and judicial independence.

It's scary to how many people that currently sounds like good government.

In the case of Le Pen, "they" are Muslims, the EU and intellectuals.

Macron never looked better than when he was standing next to Trumpff.

And that's instructive. Ordinary politicians are all a democracy needs to get along fine. Are they messy, fallible, noisy? Good! So is democracy.

Beware the poseurs who will Restore the Grandeur of Our Nation by bringing their greatness to the seats of power. We've seen so many of them in this last dreadful century.

Especially since what they're actually telling is "you are a stupid bunch of crybabies who are easily swayed by promises that all your woes will be resolved by you doing nothing and us just distracting you by making life impossible to some scapegoats or others"

It was both striking and dispiriting last night to hear the result being claimed as a victory by every party except the one which, you know, actually won the damn thing. And apparently Macron is both an arch-manipulator who set up this election the way he wanted it and a total incompetent who shouldn't be allowed to run a market stall on his own.

Even if true,Macron is 100 times better then Le Pen.
I suspect France has it equivilent of America's "Bernie Bros" who will never forgive Macron for defeating the more militant left candidates in the primary election. I alos suspect there is some Acclerationism going on of the "The faster we have fascism the faster we will have the revolution" mentality at work.

More and more I am convinced the rise of the far right has alot to do with the "Greatest Generation" pretty much gone.
The living memory of what Fascism is like in power is almost gone, giving the neo fascist a opening.
I alos think a lot of people just do not like the modern world and want to try to turn back the clock.

It seems like they have forgotten about the horrors of 1930's Europe and what that led to.
