Just an idea, not original, taken from the GenCon Stink party (you have to know GenCon or gamers to know why it is named thus) but there is a little game they play called the passport game, that is ideal for getting to know people at the start of a con.

For this game people are given little passport books with 3 slots on each page and each page has a specific theme, like attended 2+ TAMs or flew to TAM, with each page's theme being worth a certain amount of points. Each person is also given a sheet of stickers with their name on it (or forum name), and they get a little sticker to put on themselves to show they are playing the game. The idea then is to go around collecting name stickers in your passport and to fill as many slots as possible, one rule being you can accept only one sticker from each person, and when you have used up your stickers and your book as full as you can get it (bear in mind that there are more slots than stickers for each person, so negotiation can be key) you hand in your book and the person or persons with the most slots filled in their books (most points) gets a prize of some sort.

It is a very good way to get to know people if you have not attended TAM before or even if you have and it is a lot of fun too.

So, any thoughts guys?

There will be a lot of interesting people at TAM who aren't connected with the forum and won't know of the game. At TAM5 I found it impossible to not run in to someone interesting to talk to. It was actually impossible to give proper attention to everyone I met.

I'll pass.

If I want to meet someone, I walk up to them and say hello. I don't need a game to do that.

:p Fine more fun for the rest of us :p

People not in the forum can join the game as long as we have extra passports and some blank sheets for them to put initials on. There are a number of shy bodies among the forum members and this is a way for them to get to meet peeps that will make them feel more comfortable. Participation would not be mandatory but it is a lot of fun. The tag and kill game is more fun, but that works better in a true gamer crowd.

The game is just a lark and it does not take a great deal of time, there will be more than enough time to get to know others.

I've heard that people negotiating to put their "sticker" in someone's "slot" can get in trouble...

Errrrmm... honestly, I don't know. I could see this at a gaming or sci/fi convention. But, somehow it seems a tad tacky for TAM.

I am more in favor of re-introducing the idea of putting subtle, little stickers on the badges of those who wish to "advertise" that they are single.

Of course, you are free to play (or not) any games you wish.

From my point of view, it is stuff like this that reinforces stereotypes of skeptics as shy nerds with no social skills. That is why I don't participate in stuff like this or howling like a wolf (or whatever the hell it was). But to each his own.

Debbie Downer, over and out! :)

Shy nerd

For the record, I am a shy nerd with no social skills. So...let the game begin!

I propose a variation of this game that replaces the stickers with wedgies.
